You may have seen this before on other blogs and other places on the internet.

A new Chinese  cruise ship crashes into a bridge in May 2012 after the captain misjudges the height on the ship.

Captain Guo Lai, 48, chopped a tunnel off the top of the Pearl No 7 liner in Wenzhou, Zhejiang, eastern China, as he passed underneath a suspension bridge.

Costa's New Costa Diadema

Below is one of the first drawings I have seen of Costa's New Costa Diadema. It appears the ship will have a series of outdoor venues both on the side of the ship and off the stern. There is a platform built off the stern of the ship which is an outdoor Bar area attached to the  Salone La Buena.

There are 4 smaller overhangs located off restaurants and bars on each side of the ship as well.

Compagnie Polynésienne de Transport Maritime’s Aranui 3 Video and New Aranui 5

I found this great video on Compagnie Polynésienne de Transport Maritime’s Aranui 3. The ship is a freighter with modest passenger accommodations. The experience is more along the lines of a freighter cruise opposed to the luxury and amenities of cruise ships. The video had some great views of the ship, local flair and natural beauty of the South Pacific.

Aranui 5 - CPTM's New Ship Under Construction in China
Aranui 5 - CPTM's New Ship Under Construction in China

Compagnie Polynésienne de Transport Maritime’s has ordered a second ship, the Aranui 5. The Aranui 5 is currently under construction in China and expected to be delivered in 2014. There have been significant delays at the shipyard so the vessel may be delayed further. The new ship is expected to be larger, with more extensive passenger accommodations and amenities.

Regardless these cruises seems to offer extensive exposure to local South Pacific Culture, people and vistas on a working freighter.

Song of Norway, Swan Song.

Sad news came last month when it was announced that the Formosa Queen was sold to Chinese Scrappers. The Formosa Queen started her life as Royal Caribbean's Song of Norway.

Royal Caribbean's Song of Norway as Originally Constructed.

Over a long career spanning 43 years, she sailed under quite a few other names including SUNDREAM, DREAM PRINCESS, DREAM, CLIPPER PEARL, CLIPPER PACIFIC, FESTIVAL and OCEAN PEARL. Under the name FORMOSA QUEEN for Asia Star Cruises she spent her final active days as a gambling ship, until recently sold for scrap in China.

The ship has been plagued with mechanical difficulties for years probably getting the most attention during her stint with the Peaceboat and an Israeli operatior, who reportedly intentionally tried to sink her.

Th ship's most successful span of its life was as the Song of Norway for Royal Caribbean - establishing the cruise line as a major player in the Caribbean and leading the way into new markets. She was so popular that the ship was lengthened in order to increase her passenger capacity. After her career with Royal Caribbean she successfully sailed with the UK's Airtours operating out of the UK and the Mediterranean. Royal Caribbean demanded as part of the Terms of Sale that the Royal Caribbean signature Viking Crown Lounge be removed from the ship.

Italian Line's Cristoforo Colombo Re-visited

Cutaway Drawing of Italian Line's Christoforo Colombo.
Cutaway Drawing of Italian Line's  Christoforo Colombo.
Searching the internet, I found this cut-away drawing of the Cristoforo Colombo of Italian Line. Although it is smaller in size, it is really a nice find. The Colombo sailed for Italian Line on the Transatlantic circuit from 1954 to 1973. In 1973 she was moved to the Genoa-Barcelona-Lisbon-Rio-Montevideo-Buenos Aires service to replace the MS Giulio Cesare which was plagued with mechanical issues.

In 1977, the Colombo was sold to a Venezuelan oil refinery as an accommodation ship until 1981 when she was sold to scrappers in Taiwan. She was later towed to Hong Kong in hopes of future operation but was in such poor condition she was towed back to Taiwan in late 1982 and scrapped.

What is the River Cruise Vessel Michelangelo Doing In Long Island Sound?

Today I was checking the AIS system and it has the European River Cruise Vessel Michelangelo listed as sailing in Long Island Sound and its prior port of call as Bridgeport, CT. She appears to be docking in a area near Glen Cove and Port Washington New York.

Image Snapshot Courtesy of AIS on 1/14/2014

Does anyone know what the River Cruise Vessel is doing this far from home? Was AIS just off? I have seen instances where it has misplaced ships?

If anyone has any details it is appreciated.

Adrift Ship, Lyubov Orlova Beleived to have Sank

Lyubov Orlova in Happier Days
Lyubov Orlova in Happier Days

A Russian ghost ship that has been drifting around in the Atlantic Ocean after a tow line snapped has not been spotted in months, leaving some to speculate that it may be resting at the bottom of the ocean, leaking toxic waste.

The Canadian Coast Guard has not received any reported sightings of the MV Lyubov Orlova since March 12, 2013. The Russian-built Lyubov Orlova left Canada bound for a scrapyard in the Dominican Republic on Jan. 23. The following day, in rough seas,   the tow line snapped and the ship was abandoned, dead and adrift. The ship posed a navigational hazard because it did not have any operational navigation equipment to warn other ships in the area.

Two Year Anniversary of the Costa Concordia Sinking.

Costa Concordia on Happier Days.
Today marks the two year anniversary of the sinking of the Costa Concordia. The Costa Concordia hit rocks off the coast of Giglio Island, Italy after the Captain brought the ship in too close to shore. Reports indicate that the captain sailed the ship too close to shore to salute a friend on the island. The ship was holed and an attempt to beach the ship was done to prevent it from sinking. The attempts to beach the ship failed on the rocky bottom which caused the ship to sink partially and flip on its side.

The incident resulted in the death of 32 passengers and crew.

Two years later, a level platform has been built and the ship has been righted and is resting on the platform. The next steps involve attaching large enclosed containers to the side of the ship and filling those with air to lift the ship from the bottom.

The expectation is that the ship will be towed to an Italian port to be dismantled. If the Italians do not successfully bid on the scrapping project - bids from other countries will be considered. If scrapping in another country is chosen, the ship will be loaded on a heavy-lift ship and floated to its scrapping destination. The Costa Concordia is expected to be re floated by June.

Meanwhile the criminal trial of the captain continues in Italy.

Remembrance ceremonies will be held at the site of the accident as well as other key locations.

Aida's New Cruise Ship Has New Bow Design

Aida Cruises' New AidaPrima - Radical new bow design.

Aida Cruises has unveiled photos of their new ship - the AidaPrima. Aida Cruise Line's new AidaPrima will have a non-traditional bow. This design has been used for other types of ships, but this is the first time on a cruise-ship.

Unfortunately the new design helps improve the fuel consumption, but is not aesthetically pleasing. The vertical bow does not provide a sleek profile but almost gives her a battleship appearance.

The 125,000 ton AidaPrima is currently being constructed at the Mitsubishi Shipyard in Japan for a 2015 delivery. Her maiden voyage will be an 88 day sailing from Yokohama, Japan on March 20, 2015, stopping at ports in Asia, India, the Mideast, Mediterranean, Atlantic Europe and ending in Hamburg, Germany on 6/16/2015.

Sun Cruise Resort and Yacht - Courtesy of Sun Cruise Resort and Yacht

Posted to a number of blogs in recent months - this cruise ship shaped hotel perched high on a cliff, has been getting allot of press. Located in GangNeung-City, GangWon-Do, South Korea, this resort goes by the name of Sun Cruise Resort and Yacht.

Measuring in at roughly 540 feet, the cruise-ship themed resort has 211 guest rooms, two restaurants (European and Korean), a revolving sky lounge, indoor gym, golf range and a salt water pool, which offers views of the sea below.

The resort closely resembles a smaller version of a Royal Caribbean cruise ship and some of the hotel rooms have oversize port holes instead of traditional windows.

The Resort's website does how some great photos of the facilities and an English version of the website.

France II - Nothing Like the France of 1963

In an effort to cash-in on the fame of French Line's France of 1963, plans are underway to build the France II. Although there are some exterior features of the ship, which are supposed to remind viewers of the original France, it really is a stretch of the imagination.

The iconic winged funnels on the original ship, have become massive hotel towers with wings.
Above is a video of what the proposed cruise-ship will appear once completed. It is quiet an innovative design and potentially the next leap in cruise ship design.

Duke of Lancaster - Abandoned and Artists Canvass

Duke of Lancaster Earlier in Life, Now abandoned has become an artists canvass.
I came across this article on the abandoned Duke of Lancaster. It appears as the ship is waiting for new employment (and a significant infusion of money) or a trip to scrappers, local artists/ graffiti artists have use the ship as their canvass.

Queen Elizabeth 2 Interior Design Changes and New Role.

Ex Cunard Queen Elizabeth 2 - Reportedly to be used in Asia as a Hotel Ship.
Ex Cunard Queen Elizabeth 2 - Reportedly to be used in Asia as a Hotel Ship.
Cunard's Queen Elizabeth 2, which has been sitting in Dubai for years since her sale to middle-east buyers, appears to be have found employment in Southeast Asia. The QE2 was originally slated to become part of the Dubai-World project, but those plans were later shelved after the worldwide economic downturn.

The QE2 has been in a drydock in Dubai preparing for her voyage or tow to a China shipyard. Once at the shipyard a major restructuring of her internal layout will occur. Various plans have been submitted by architectural firms for the moderization of the classic liner.

Here are some of the plans submitted for the interior redesign of the QE2.

Although no exact location has been chosen for the QE2's new role - Singapore, Hong Kong or Shanghai are the top contenders.
