Meyer Werft 2013 Year in Review

I found this interesting video from Papenburg, Germany's Meyer Werft Shipyard. The Video highlights some of Meyer Werft's key ships delivered in the past year including the AIDA Stella, Norwegian Breakaway and Norwegian Getaway. There is even a video of the conveyance of the ships down the Elms River.

Hope you enjoy it.

Cruise Retirement is Trying to Make Retirement on a Cruise Ship a Reality.

Gemini - Proposed to be the first ship for Cruise Retirement of Australia
Gemini - Proposed to be the first ship for Cruise Retirement of Australia
A new start-up company in Australia is giving the 50+ Age travelers/retirees the opportunity to purchase their own cabin on a cruise ship and sail around the world. It appears that the operators are looking to charter a ship from International Shipping Partners. From the photos on the website, the ship appears to be the Gemini. The Gemini is a former Crown Cruise Line ship. Although the project is in start-up mode, the company website does provide some limited information.

It is quite an interesting concept, although is it not unusual for older passengers to sail a significant portion of the year on cruise ships. I remember I met someone who had traveled a good portion of every year on one of the Cunard ships. The person told me for the money - the cruise was much better than a nursing home. Where can we get great food, entertainment, care and see the world?

Additional details on the Cruise Retirement concept can be found at their site.

The Ramform Titan - Deemed one of the Ugliest Ships

The Ramform Titan, a seismic vessel owned by Norway's Petroleum Geo-Services (PGS), boasts a stern 70m wide, making it one of the world's widest boats. The ship itself is deeemed by spectators and the ulgiest ships afloat.

The picture below show a view of the ship, which I to not think is so bad.  at least from this angle. :-)

 See for yourself.

Ramform Titan - Highly functional seismic vessel but not the most visually appealing: Source http://www.pgs.com

Cunard's Queen Mary 2 Interesting Facts

Cunard's Queen Mary 2 - Interesting Stats
Cunard's Queen Mary 2 - Interesting Stats

At 1,132 feet in length, if stood on her stern, Queen Mary 2 would be taller than New York’s Empire State Building and more than three times the height of St Paul’s Cathedral in London.  Her 151,400 gross tonnage is the equivalent of nearly 19,000 London buses, and she boasts over four times as many rooms as the Dorchester Hotel.  She took a million hours to design and eight million hours to build, and the 1,000 miles of welding that holds this amazing liner together would stretch from London to Moscow.

In her first ten years of service, Queen Mary 2 has sailed the equivalent of three times to the moon and back, carrying more than 1.3 million guests, enough to fill Westminster Abbey 651 times. In addition, more than 2,000 dogs have travelled on Queen Mary 2, five times as many as in the UK’s famous Battersea Dogs Home.

Greek Ferry Operator Masters the Elements.

I found this video very interesting as a Greek Ferry operator docks his vessel in rough seas. As you can see in the video the loading/unloading operation is quite perilous in the rough seas.
