United States Lines - S/S United States Revisited

SS United States - Postcard showing the ship in happier days.
This past weekend I found myself traveling through Philadelphia. Since I was in the vicinity, I had to stop and see the S/S United States.

As you come across the Walt Whitman Bridge from New Jersey entering into Philly, the great funnels of the liner quickly come into view.

The ship is truly amazing. This is the 3rd time I have seen the United States. Once going to Norfolk, just before she left for Turkey to have the asbestos removed (eventually having the asbestos removed in Sevestopol, Ukraine), and then twice in Philadelphia.

Although you cannot get on-board or close to the ship, you need to shoot photos over the fence or from the water to get good shots. Decent views are available from the shopping center across the street as well.

Having been laid up since 1969, the exterior of the ship is well in need of a long overdue sandblasting, painting and loving care but it is incredibly impressive and nothing like any of the cruise ships today. The majority of the interior has been stripped to the bulkheads. The bare interior provides flexibility for investors with deep pockets, to design the interior of their choice, . The sleek lines and greater than life dimensions of the ship give her the impression of being larger than she really is. Structurally she still looks sound and strong.

The ship is currently owned by the SS United States Conservancy who is seeking to find a developer and hopefully a permanent home for the ship

I am going to dedicate this week's daily blog to the S/S United States and her preservation. Over the next week days, Nick's Cruise Corner will be feature videos from various sources on the SS United States. Be sure to stop by daily.

If you are interested in learning how you can help preserve this great piece of American History, please visit the SS United States Conservancy site.

Interesting Find - Original Plans Proposed for the Queen Elizabeth 2 in Dubai

Found this interesting artists rendering of the modifications proposed to the Queen Elizabeth 2 - when she was scheduled to be part of the Nakheel's Palm Jumeirah in Dubai in 2008. The plans included removing her funnel and using it as part of the grand entry to the ship. The space where her funnel was located, would be replaced with penthouses, only after her engines were removed and her engine room re-purposed to create more cabins and entertainment venues.

The global financial crisis shelved all of these plans.

New plans for the QE2 include full internal remodeling in China and becoming a Far East Hotel and Entertainment Center keeping most of her external appearance in place as well as her engines.

Norwegian Cruise Line Unveils Hull Art and Itinerary For the New Norwegian Escape

Hull Art on Norwegian Cruise Line's New Norwegian Escape

Norwegian Escape

Norwegian Cruise Line announced that Guy Harvey, widely recognized as the world’s finest marine wildlife artist and champion of ocean conservation, has been named to design the signature hull artwork of the line’s largest ship to date, Norwegian Escape, scheduled to debut in October 2015. Norwegian’s newest ship is Harvey’s largest canvas to date, at 1065 feet in length, with his artwork spanning from the hull to the aft featuring two undersea scenes that blend seamlessly.

Harvey combines his unique artistic talents with his background as a marine biologist, diver, photographer and angler, to create marine wildlife art with an unmatched authenticity and visual appeal.
“The larger than life paintings of popular but endangered marine creatures in the Caribbean will heighten public awareness about marine life. The large scale mural demonstrates the concern and respect that Norwegian and I have for the marine environment through which this ship will travel over the years.”

Norwegian’s newest and largest ship to date, at approximately 163,000 gross tons and 4,200 passenger berths, Norwegian Escape will join the fleet in October 2015. Beginning November 14, 2015, Norwegian Escape will offer seven-day Eastern Caribbean sailings from her year-round home port of Miami cruising to Tortola, British Virgin Islands; St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands; and Nassau, Bahamas. The ship will boast all of exciting and innovative features found on Norwegian Breakaway and Norwegian Getaway, plus a number of new spaces and interactive experiences that are yet to be announced.

This video shows the stylish/sleek interiors of P&O Cruises New Britannia. Currently under construction in Italy.

The design seems to combine the sophistication of Celebrity Cruises New builds, Norwegian Cruise Line's atrium and Chandelier and the balconies over the main lounge on the Queen Mary2.

This is an older video, produced prior to the new exterior color scheme.

The Britannia is expected to debut in the Spring of 2015.
