Abandoned Ocean Dream Sinks Off Thailand.

I missed this news story,  on February 27, 2016, the abandoned Ocean Dream sank off the coast of the Port of Laem Chabang in Thailand.

The ship was reportedly abandoned by her Chinese owners for over a year. The ship was left in a  delinquent state unmanned, and allowed to deteriorate under the hot southeast Asian sun. When the crew left the ship, a side portal was left open which helped to accelerate the sinking of the ship over a years time.

When laid down at the Cantiere Navale di Riva Trigoso Shipyard in 1970, Ocean Dream was originally slated to become the Seaward for Norwegian Caribbean Lines. When the price to construct the ship increased, Norwegian Caribbean opted to not take the option for the ship. The option was picked up by P&O Cruises and the ship was delivered as the Spirit of London. In 1974, the Spirit of London was sold to Premier Cruises and became the Majestic and later the Starship Majestic. In July 1995, the Starship Majestic was sold to CTC Australia and sailed as the Southern Cross. Additional name included the  Flamenco for Festival Cruises. The New Flamenco for Cruise Elysia. The Flamenco 1 for Club Cruise and later the Ocean Dream for various Asian interests.

In total, before her demise the ship enjoyed a career of 46 years. Today the Ocean Dream, remains on her side in the port of Laem Chabang in Thailand waiting scrappers to either dismantle the ship, or allow her to slowly deteriorate.

Local environmentalist are concerned because the vessel is leaking oil and polluting the local environment.

What Ever Happened to Home Line's Atlantic / MSC Cruises - MSC Melody

Home Line's Atlantic During Happier Times on a Cruise From New York to Bermuda.
Home Line's Atlantic During Happier Times on a Cruise From New York to Bermuda.

Ever wonder what happened to the popular Atlantic of Home Lines fame? The Atlantic was build for the ever popular Home Lines to sail from New York to Bermuda in the spring, summer and fall and the Caribbean in the winter. The ship is modest in size, at 33,000 tons - about 25% the size of the mega-ships today. Home Lines was a very popular cruise line which operated great ships like the Homeric, Oceanic, Italia and Doric.

With the sale of the Home Lines, the Atlantic was purchased by Holland America which in turn sold the ship to Premier Cruises. Under the Premier banner the Atlantic was renamed StarShip Atlantic running 3 and 4 day cruises from Cape Canaveral to the Bahamas. The cruises were sold in a package that usually included a stay at a Florida theme park.

Eventually the StarShip Atlantic was sold to MSC Cruises as one of their initial ships sailing in the Mediterranean and sometimes spending the winter in South Africa. As the MSC fleet grew and became more modern, the Melody was withdrawn from service and then later sold to a new start up cruise line in India.

Renamed Qing, the ships sailed a very short season and was laid up in a shipyard at Vasco Da Gama, India. The owners of the shipyard have gone bankrupt and the ship is sitting idle alongside a work pier.

Unfortunately it does not appear that there will be a cruise operator in her future and expect that in the end, the Qing will be towed across the bay to Alang, India for beaching and scrapping. I really do hope I am wrong.

New Cruise Operator Victory Cruise Line to Start in July.

Victory 1 - Victory Cruise Line Departures to the Great Lakes, Canada, Cuba
Victory 1 - Victory Cruise Line Departures to the Great Lakes, Canada, Cuba
In a surprise move a new cruise line has emerged - Victory Cruise Lines will be moving into deep sea cruising starting in July.

Miami based cruise line has entered into an agreement to charter the Saint Laurent which will be renamed the Victory 1. The 5,500 ton, 202 passenger ship will begin sailing from Montreal, Canada along the Saint Lawrence Seaway and  throughout the Great Lakes starting July 8th 2016.

I am surprised that the time from the announcement to the first sailing is just about 1 month. This surely will put extreme pressure on the cruise line to fill the initial cruises.

After completing a season in the Great Lakes, the Victory 1 will be re-locating from Montreal to Miami, Florida. The Victory 1 will then sail a series of  cruises from Miami to Cuba.

Bruce Nierenberg - Cruise Industry veteran from Premier Cruises is leading the effort and has, in past years, been focused on establishing a ferry service between Florida and Cuba. Cuban officials have paid little attention to licensing ferry operators - but have been more focused on cruise operators.

In just under 2 weeks, the Panama Canal Expansion project will be nearing an end. The new canal locks and waterway are expect to open on June 26th, 2016 and will be capable of handling the largest ships available today.

I found the two videos below quite interesting. The first video is presented as a status of the progress of the Canal's expansion project. The second video shows how the new pilots have been trained for handling the ships though the new locks and channels.

By the way, the COSCO Shipping Panama - the first vessel to use the new expanded Canal departed Piraeus on June 12 and expected to make the two week trek to the canal - arriving on June 26th,

5/21/2016 - Small ship operator American Cruise Line has announced that "American Constellation" will be the name of its latest small cruise ship. The ship is currently under construction at Chesapeake Shipbuilding in Salisbury, Maryland.

Larger than most vessel in the American Cruise Line fleet, the new American Constellation can accommodate 170 passengers and will be fitted with stabilizers which will make the ship capable of deep sea cruising. The American Constellation, closely resembles Pearl Sea Cruises' Pearl Mist - which was built for American Cruise Line's sister brand Pearl Sea Cruises.

The American Constellation will cater to the discriminating passengers looking for a high end and intimate cruise experience on a small ship. Each stateroom will be 350 square feet and is tastefully furnished. Each stateroom will open to a balcony allowing passengers to take in the outdoors.

The ship will also feature zodiacs and kayaks to allow passengers to explore the waterways of ports of calls close up.

These small ships do not have casinos nor a pool but make up for these by offering intriguing ports of call and an intimate and personalized cruise experience.

The American Constellation is expected to enter the cruising scene in the first quarter of 2017- some 11 weeks ahead of schedule.
