SAINT-NAZAIRE, FRANCE – Nov. 21, 2016 – The next generation of cruise ships moves from concept to construction today, as the first piece of steel is cut at the STX France shipyard for Celebrity Cruises’ newest — and boldest — ship.

The ship will be called "Celebrity Edge," befitting the many daring design advances and innovations of Celebrity's first new ship class since 2008. The modern luxury cruise line is also announcing today the name of Edge’s sister ship, “Celebrity Beyond,” signaling the incredible experience guests can expect onboard Celebrity Edge and the entire Edge Class, changing the way travelers see the world.

"Edge Class is destined to be a trailblazer in modern luxury travel," said Richard D. Fain, Chairman and CEO of Royal Caribbean Cruises, Ltd. "The new ships will be on the cutting edge of innovation and the leading edge of design, so the ship names are spot on and offer a sense of how Celebrity Cruises is looking into the future.”

Lisa Lutoff-Perlo, Celebrity's President and CEO, said: "We set the bar high for the architects and designers on Edge class, and we were rewarded with a stunning design. Cutting the ship's first piece of steel is the traditional first step in the shipbuilding process, and I'm excited to see our dreams turn into reality over the next 24 months."

She added: "We are excited to reveal more details soon, and travelers, trade partners and enthusiasts alike will not be disappointed — this ship is going to be amazing."

Laurent Castaing, General Manager STX France said: "Everyone involved in Edge has embraced the challenge of making this new class of ships dramatic and special, and we take great pride in helping Celebrity Cruises take such a remarkable step forward in ship design."

The company expects delivery of Celebrity Edge in Fall 2018. Celebrity Beyond is scheduled for delivery in Spring 2020, and the third and fourth Edge Class ships in Fall 2021 and Fall 2022, respectively.

Norwegian Cruise Line - Norwegian Jewel - Recently Fitted With Emission Scrubbers.

Interesting tidbit found in Norwegian Cruise Line's Earning Statement Released Last Week.

As part of the Company’s continued commitment to the environment, Norwegian Jewel, Norwegian Pearl and Norwegian Gem were each successfully retrofitted with a new exhaust gas scrubber system this quarter.  These scrubbers aim to significantly reduce air emissions, thus reducing the fleet’s environmental footprint.  The ships’ new lightweight in-line scrubbers are a hybrid technology developed by Yara Marine Technologies that are able to operate in dry mode, open loop and closed loop. Five scrubbers were installed, one per engine, covering the whole propulsion system.  Collectively, they are capable of reducing the emission of sulfur into the air by up to 99 percent and also reducing 85 percent of particulate emission into the air.

The Company currently has five ships outfitted with exhaust gas scrubber technology with Norwegian Pearl and Gem joining Norwegian Jewel, Escape and Pride of America.  Norwegian Jade and Norwegian Sun are scheduled for retrofitting in the first and second quarter of 2017, respectively.  In addition, all remaining ships on order for the Norwegian Cruise Line brand will also be outfitted with similar technology.

Prior to launching service from their new homeports, both ships will offer extended Panama Canal cruises in January 2018 that will feature a variety of spectacular ports throughout the Caribbean, Mexico and Central America. Carnival Splendor will also operate unique 14-day Hawaii cruises round trip from Long Beach.
With these capacity increases, Carnival is further bolstering its leadership position in two popular homeports, adding a second year-round ship in Tampa with Carnival Miracle and a newer, larger vessel on the West Coast with Carnival Splendor.
“Tampa and Long Beach are both highly convenient and popular homeports and we’re delighted to provide our guests with exciting new year-round cruise vacation choices in these two markets,” said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line.

Three different itineraries will be offered, each featuring stunning destinations along the Mexican Riviera. One itinerary visits Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlán and Puerto Vallarta, another spends two days at Cabo San Lucas and a full day in Puerto Vallarta, and a third overnights in Puerto Vallarta with a day-long call in Cabo San Lucas, as well.  On these cruises, guests can relax on beautiful beaches, visit centuries-old historical sites and enjoy unforgettable dining and shopping experiences.

Royal Caribbean's Harmony of the Seas to be Named by Brittany Affolter On November 10, 2016 in Port Everglades.

Brittany Affolter from Teach For America Miami-Dade has been selected to serve as godmother for Harmony of the Seas during naming festivities at Port Everglades November. 10, 2016.
Affolter, 23, was among three finalists chosen from nearly one thousand nominations from Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties. Finalists were selected and voted on by the public to help choose a South Florida hometown hero in education.

'We were exceptionally impressed by the passion she has for empowering our youth to believe in a better world and brighter future. She is wise beyond her years, and we can only imagine the accomplishments that she will continue to achieve,' Royal Caribbean president and ceo Michael Bayley said.

Affolter overcame a difficult background with the help of inspiring teachers and has been working with Teach For America Miami-Dade since 2014. She engages classrooms in schools across the county that meet the needs of at-risk and low-income students and trains teachers at 14 high-need schools, serving more than 500 students. In her spare time, she tutors students, is working to become a mentor for children in foster care and is completing her master's degree in educational leadership.

Affolter hopes her selection as godmother can 'help give a voice to all the hard-working teachers that give so much of themselves to make a meaningful difference.' She said her priority is helping kids understand that 'no matter what is going on in their lives, they can reach the dreams they have for themselves.'

Royal Caribbean will award a $25,000 grant to Teach For America Miami-Dade, funding education initiatives that further Affolter's mission to inspire the community's youth.

World's largest cruise ship Harmony of the Seas is scheduled to arrive at its new year-round home, Port Everglades, on Nov. 5.
