Princess Cruises Fined $40 Million Dollars For Illegally Releasing Oil into the Sea

Princess Cruises' Caribbean Princess at Sea
Princess Cruises' Caribbean Princess at Sea

Princess Cruises has pleaded guilty and will pay $40 Million dollars in fines for illegally bypassing purification  and detection devices and releasing oily water directly into the ocean. The practice has reportedly gone on for years (prior to 2013)  by select engineers on the Caribbean Princess. Their illegal actions have been intentionally covered up crew members. The oil was illegally dumped due to the high prices associated with responsible processing and proper disposal of the oil on shore.

According to papers filed in court, the Caribbean Princess had been making illegal discharges through bypass equipment since 2005, one year after the ship began operations. The discharge on Aug. 26, 2013, involved approximately 4,227 gallons, 23 miles off the coast of England within the country’s Exclusive Economic Zone. At the same time as the discharge, engineers simultaneously ran clean seawater through the ship’s overboard equipment in order to create a false digital record for a legitimate discharge. "The Caribbean Princess used multiple methods over the course of time to pollute the seas.

Princess Cruises' President Jan Swartz issued the following statement.... Taking ownership for the issue and assuring the necessary preventative measures have been taken to significantly reduce the chances of the issue happening again.

United Airlines will begin charging for Carry On Luggage starting January 1. 2017
Starting on January 1st, 2017, United Airlines is going to begin charging you for carry on luggage that is stowed in the overhead bins. The new fee is expected to drive an addition $1 Billion dollars in profits for the airline. To me this further strengthens the appeal of  close to home cruises where airfare and all the fees are not needed.

Seabourn, the world's finest ultra-luxury cruise line, took delivery of its newest all-suite vessel, Seabourn Encore, today during an official handover ceremony at the Fincantieri shipyard in Marghera, Italy.

"We have been looking forward to this day for over two years. Seabourn Encore has become a stunning ship that will set a new standard in ultra-luxury cruising," said Richard Meadows, president of Seabourn. "I am very proud of our partnership with Fincantieri, and it has been a great pleasure to work together to transform raw materials into this incredible vessel that will make a great addition to the Seabourn fleet."

"The jewel we deliver today is the first built for Seabourn, and dry dock works for the second vessel of this new and prestigious client will start in the next few days in our shipyard in Sestri Ponente. I say this with a certain pride and a lot of satisfaction, because Seabourn represents the top range offer of the Carnival Group and Fincantieri is now identified as an absolute reference point from the market, able to offer tailor-made products to an ever wider range of customers," said Giuseppe Bono, CEO of Fincantieri. "This gratifying result became possible thanks to the strategy stubbornly followed in the last years that has allowed us to be in the best conditions to seize the opportunities offered by the market."

Guests of Seabourn Encore will be treated to the line's extraordinary levels of personalized service, with a high staff to guest ratio. The ship carries 600 guests, based on double occupancy, who reside in 300 elegantly appointed suites each with a private verandah.

Designed by hospitality design icon Adam D. Tihany who intended Seabourn Encore "to feel more like a luxury yacht," the 40,350-GRT vessel features modern design elements and innovations in keeping with Seabourn's reputation for understated elegance, as well as one additional deck and new expanded public areas. The ship expands and builds on the line's award-winning and highly acclaimed Odyssey-class ships, which revolutionized ultra-luxury cruising with enhanced accommodations and innovative amenities when they were introduced between 2009 and 2011. New features include The Retreat, a sanctuary designed for guests to relax in private cabanas, with a Spa Treatment Cabana for personalized spa services.

In addition, guests will enjoy superb cuisine, including The Grill by Thomas Keller, the new signature restaurant from three-star Michelin chef Thomas Keller that was introduced on Seabourn Quest earlier this year and will be expanded to the entire Seabourn fleet.  A new restaurant for Seabourn, Sushi, makes its debut as a destination for foodies, with a unique look and feel and high-quality dishes served throughout the day.

A new production show, 'An Evening with Tim Rice,' created exclusively for Seabourn in association with Belinda King Creative Productions, will open onboard Seabourn Encore in January 2017, when she sails from Singapore on her inaugural voyage. The new Spa and Wellness with Dr. Andrew Weil mindful living program also debuts on Seabourn Encore in January. Both Tim Rice and Dr. Weil will sail on the inaugural voyage.

Encore will be officially christened at a ceremony in Singapore on January 7, 2017. International recording artist and world's best-selling Soprano, Sarah Brightman, will be godmother of Seabourn Encore and officially name the ship during the celebration. The vessel will then depart on its Inaugural Voyage, the 10-day Gems of the Java Sea cruise, bound for Indonesia.

StarShip Cruises Caribbean Galaxy Expected to Start Sailing from Jamaica and The Mediterranean.
StarShip Cruises Caribbean Galaxy Expected to Start Sailing from Jamaica and The Mediterranean.

The Jamaica Observer reported in late October, that a new start up cruise line will begin sailing from Jamaica as soon as December of the this year. Under the banner of StarShip Cruises and based in Florida - the new operation is expect to being sailing using a ship named the Caribbean Galaxy which is a Mediterranean cruise/ferry. The 1,658 passenger cruise/ferry will be reportedly focused on providing a Millennial-experience focusing on education, music, culture, partying and philanthropy.

It appear that Jamaica will benefit greatly from this new operation which is expected to call at Kingston, Montego Bay, Negril and Port Antonio, Jamaica - December through April. The cruise line's website, which definitely caters to the party crowd, also mentions select cruises with stops in Cuba. No sailing dates are listed but it does mention that in the late Spring and Summer, the ship will sail the Mediterranean.

I was able to find the following website for StarShip Cruise Line.

Anniversary of the Bankruptcy of Cargo Ship Operator Hellenic Lines.

Hellenic Lines' Passenger Cargo Ship - Hellenic Star.
Hellenic Lines' Passenger Cargo Ship - Hellenic Star.
This past Wednesday (12/14/2016) marked the 33rd anniversary of the bankruptcy of Hellenic Lines. Hellenic Lines was a privately owned cargo ship company which also carried approximately 12 passengers on each of their cargo ships.  The company primarily operated older, geared cargo ships (ships with cranes to load and unload cargo) and was slow to make the conversion from loose, palletized cargo to full container ships. The company did convert many of their ships to hold containers on deck but introduced full container-ships much later than their competitors. When the line finally started to employ fully containerized ships, many of the company's trade routes (specifically project cargo to Mid East for oil production) dropped significantly. The company could not longer make their mortgage payments on their ships with forced their bankruptcy. Plans to reorganize was not to be and the ships were either scrapped or sold off to other operators.

The grey-hulled ships of Hellenic Lines were frequent visitors to New York Harbor sailing from Bush Terminals Pier 58 in Brooklyn and then later sailing from the Northeast Marine Terminal at 39th Street in Brooklyn.

Antarctic Dream Now In the Gulf Of Oman

The Antarctic Dream which dates back to 1958, previously sailed on expedition cruises to Chile and Antarctica. The ship was retired in 2012 but appears to have been sold to Royalty or Rich investors in Oman or the United Arab Emirates. The ship has remained off the shore of Oman for about 2-3 years and sails in an unusual pattern up and down the Gulf of Oman. The ship carries 80 passengers and has a crew of 47.

It is unclear if the name of the ship has been modified since some sources now have her listed as the Antabctic Dream.

SuperYacht Nahlin

While surfing the net..... I found this exquisite, restored yacht dating back to 1929. Combining sleek, traditional design of yesteryear - the Nahlin represents  elegance and sophistication of years gone bye.

Super Yacht NAHLIN is a 300 feet long vessel designed in 1929 by G.L. Watson & Co. Built by John Brown & Co., she was  rediscovered  and completely restored to her full splendor by Nobiskrug Shipyard and Blohm + Voss Shipyard over the past five years.

The ship carries 14 passengers and a crew of 47.

The Yacht is supposedly not currently for charter and is being used privately.

I think I can used to cruising on a ship like this :-)

Adventure will be in no short supply for guests who opt to spend their day on Harvest Caye, with the island featuring a 130 foot tall Flighthouse as the central area for a variety of aerial activities including zip lining, suspension bridges, free fall jumps, a tandem “superman” style zip line and stunning views of the verdant hills of the mainland. Harvest Caye’s zip line course will have more than 3,000 feet of zip line, allowing guests to soar through the air with a bird’s eye view of the island and the sea, with stops at three different platforms. To top off the adventure, the Flighthouse will include a challenging but fun ropes course located on a platform in the saltwater lagoon. For a lower adrenaline adventure, guests can also enjoy eco-activities and watersports such as kayaking, paddle boarding and canoeing in Harvest Caye’s shallow lagoon area, where wildlife is abundant.

Harvest Caye also features a variety of dining and bar options, available à la carte. Guests will enjoy five dining and bar outlets that feature a variety of cuisines, including a two-story indoor/outdoor LandShark Bar & Grill. An expansion of Norwegian’s partnership with Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville®, the LandShark Bar & Grill is sure to be an island favorite, with a scenic upper deck and a swim-up pool bar for the ultimate way to enjoy a “boat drink”. Those who want to indulge in authentic Belizean cuisine can enjoy casual street style dining in the shopping village. Additional dining options include the Laughing Bird Bar & Grill serving the beach, the Manatee Marina Bar & Grill in the marina, the Horse-Eye Jack Bar & Grill servicing the island’s cabanas as well as food and drink delivery throughout the pool area.

No port-of-call would be complete without superior shopping options, and Harvest Caye will offer a shopping village; inspired by an outdoor art festival the village features high-quality local retailers offering items like locally made chocolates, spirits, beautiful artwork including the area’s signature wood carvings and more, along with street carts featuring local Belizean favorites including ice cream, grilled skewers and artisan crafts. As guests stroll through the shopping village they’ll also have the opportunity to enjoy performances from local musicians and folk dancers.

Guests with an affinity for wildlife will marvel at Harvest Caye’s many opportunities for an up close encounter with this rich eco-destination’s local plants and animals. To learn about the native flora and fauna in this stunning destination, guests can participate in manatee observation tours at the lagoon to learn about the gentle giants; get up close and personal with endangered Scarlet Macaws and Toucans, Belize’s national bird, in the island’s Aviary; wonder at the striking beauty of insects at the Butterfly Garden; and learn more about and view Belize’s indigenous reptiles like the boa constrictor.

Harvest Caye’s conservation programs and education efforts were developed by award winning author and wildlife expert Tony Garel, the destination’s Chief Naturalist. He will lead many of the island’s educational tours and will be available to chat with guests about the incredible array of wildlife in Belize.  The island’s aviary will also house a breed and release program for Scarlet Macaws, in an effort to increase the population of the native birds. To help further the island’s conservation efforts, more than 15,000 new mangroves have been planted throughout the island, serving to increase the natural estuary system that serves as a critical habitat for birds, young fish and other marine species.

Harvest Caye also serves as a gateway to spectacular eco and cultural adventures that await in mainland Belize. The destination’s marina, located near the pier, serves as a convenient departure point for a wide variety of shore excursions that allow guests to explore this rich destination, including spectacular Mayan ruins, river rafting, nature tours and more. When guests arrive on the mainland at the Malacate transportation hub, they are immediately immersed in Belizean culture with local vegetation and flora mimicking that of a traditional Belize plantation.
Guests will have the opportunity to enjoy Harvest Caye on Norwegian Cruise Line’s Western Caribbean itineraries, as well as on select Caribbean sailings on Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Oceania Cruises in Winter 2017 and Fall/Winter 2018.
