This past Friday (January 13th) marked the 5 Year anniversary of the sinking of the Costa Concordia. As you may recall, the captain of the ship, brought the ship too close to shore when sailing by the island of
Giglio. The captain navigation too close to jagged rocks which ripped through the right side of the ship. In an effort to prevent the ship from sinking, the captain beached the ship on a ledge, where the ship continued to fill with water and keel over on her side.
The incident resulted in the death of 32 people and injuring an additional 157. A remembrance ceremony was held which included a special Mass; the sounding of boat sirens in tribute and a torchlight procession in memory of the the deceased.
The ship has been since been righted, refloated and towed to Italian mainland to be dismantled. At this time very little remains of the ship.
