Expected to begin operations in 2018, Croisières M/S Jacques-Cartier is planning to start St. Lawrence River cruises. Cruises are expected to originate in Trois-Rivières, but depending on the demand and itineraries Montreal, Quebec City, and Toronto are additional possibilities. More itinerary information will be available in early 2017 but it is expected the ship's small size will be leveraged to provide stops in unique destinations not normally accessible by larger ships. The ship will also cater to active individuals offering biking, hiking and kayak excursions.
The company is expected to spend $6.6 Million dollars on renovations and remodeling of  the ship to accommodate 66 passengers. The ship most recently operated as a sight-seeing vessel on the St. Lawrence but will undergo a transformation by a major yacht designer to create a unique and upscale environment.

“Performing in such an intimate setting aboard the Carnival Vista, was a really special experience,” said Underwood. “I look forward to doing that again and connecting with fans aboard the Carnival Imagination next spring,” she added.
Underwood joins Carnival LIVE’s 2017 lineup which includes performances by best-selling country artists Tim McGraw and Little Big Town and comedians Jay Leno and Jeff Foxworthy who will perform on seven different ships departing from five convenient U.S. homeports.

45 Year Anniversary of the Seawise University Fire.

Earlier this month marked the 45 year anniversary of the tragic loss of the Seawise University in Hong Kong Harbor.

After Cunard removed their 1939 Queen Elizabeth from service, the ship was placed for sale and purchased by C.Y. Tung for intended use as the Seawise University. As the names indicates, the ship was to undergo an extensive refit to covert her into a floating university. Public rooms were transformed for dual purposes to classrooms and lounges. Accommodations were modified to create dorm room type furnishings and sleeping arrangements. The exterior of the ship was painted white and the C.Y. Tung Rose was placed on the funnels. C.Y Tung's corporate name was also painted in red emblazoned letters on her side "Orient Overseas Line". The ship was in the final stages of her fitting out in Hong Kong harbor when a fire mysteriously started on the Seawise University on January 9, 1972. The fire quick engulfed the entire ship and the badly damaged liner rolled over on her side. Declared a total loss, the ship was scrapped on site over the next 2-3 years.

Costa Cruises Costa Concordia resting on her side after the incident in January 2012.

This past Friday (January 13th) marked the 5 Year anniversary of the sinking of the Costa Concordia. As you may recall, the captain of the ship, brought the ship too close to shore when sailing by the island of
Giglio. The captain navigation too close to jagged rocks which ripped through the right side of the ship. In an effort to prevent the ship from sinking, the captain beached the ship on a ledge, where the ship continued to fill with water and keel over on her side.

The incident resulted in the death of 32 people and injuring an additional 157. A remembrance ceremony was held which included a special Mass; the sounding of boat sirens in tribute and a torchlight procession in memory of the the deceased.

The ship has been since been righted, refloated and towed to Italian mainland to be dismantled. At this time very little remains of the ship.

Cut A Way Drawing of CDF's Horizon - Reports indicate that CDF will Cease Operation in February 2017
Cut A Way Drawing of CDF's Horizon - Reports indicate that CDF will Cease Operation in February 2017

Having decided to concentrate on the Spanish and Latin American markets, Pullmantur plans to close the CDF Croisières de France office in Paris by the end of February. The decision is primarily a financial one, since the Latin American and Spanish Market are more lucrative than the French Market. CDF currently is a 1 ship operation utlilizing the Horizon. which at one time sailed as the Horizon for Celebrity Cruises in the 1990s.

Under the agreement with Pullmantur, Royal Caribbean owns 49% of Pullmantur giving up the majority share in a recent transaction BUT owns ships operated by Pullmantur and leases them back to Pullmantur. It will be interesting to see if the Horizon remerges in the Royal Caribbean or Celebrity fleet sailing from Florida to Cuba.

Only time will tell.

England's All Leisure Group Ceases Operations

All Leisure Group's Smart and Elegant Minerva

Earlier this month, we witnessed the collapse of England's All Leisure Group. All Leisure is the parent company of  Swan Hellenic Cruises, Hebridean Island Cruises and Voyages of Discovery. The operator cited the unrest in the Eastern Mediterranean which has been, traditionally, their bread and butter, for their financial woes. Rumors stated that in late December, All Leisure was seeking a buyer for part or all of their operation, but to no avail. All cruises for the Voyager and Minerva have been cancelled effective immediately. Preparation were made to return stranded passengers back to their point of origination.  .

This week it was announced that the Herbidean Princess was purchased by her creditors and will resume sailing under the Herbidean Island Cruises banner again starting in March. At 50 passengers and 38 crew, the ultra-luxury ship has been chartered by the Queen of England (in the past) when a royal yacht has been needed.

The other 2 ships, the Minerva and Voyager are assumed to be for sale to satisfy creditors.

Original Titanic Just After Her Delivery - Replica being Built in China

CNN has reported....... A replica of the Titanic is being built in China some 700+ miles from the sea.

Hong Kong (CNN) Well at least this one probably won't sink.
China is building a life-size replica of the doomed RMS Titanic in a landlocked county more than 1,200 kilometers (745 miles) from the sea.

When completed, the replica ship will measure 269 meters (882 ft) long by 28 meters (92 ft) wide and will feature reproductions of the original Titanic's features, including a ballroom, theater, swimming pool and rooms, according to Chinese state-run news agency Xinhua.

The total cost of the project is expected to run to around 1 billion yuan, or $145 million.

The replica is being built as part of a tourism development partially funded by the government of Daying county, in China's Sichuan province.

Daying is located around 130 kilometers from the provincial capital Chengdu, and several hundred miles from the sea. The replica Titanic will be permanently docked in a reservoir in the Qijiang River.

Planning for the project has been underway for over two years, though building work only began this week, according to the state-run China Daily. "After the RMS Titanic sank, nobody saw its complete set of blueprints," Su Shaojun, one of the financiers of the project, told the newspaper.

"Many blueprint fragments found their way into the hands of collectors or remained missing. We spent many years collecting the blueprints from many parts of the world and managed to obtain most of them."

Famous Laid up Cruise Ship Qing Sinks After Monsoon (ex Atlantic, StarShip Atlantic, MSC Melody)

The cruise ship Qing, after years of lay-up at the Western Shipyard Limited at Mormugao Harbour in Vasco, Goa, India, began taking on water during a monsoon on June 29, 2016, The ship, which was sold to Sahra India Pariwar in 2013, was supposed to be converted into a hotel and casino. The conversion work was stalled when the local authorities would not issue a license for the operation.

The Qing remained idle at the ship yard for 3 years, with a skeleton crew overseeing the ship. It is believed that water entered the vessel as a result of the monsoon. As the ship began to take on water, the supervisory crew abandoned the ship, leaving doors open to the elements. These open doors eventually led to the ship filling with water and the ship's hull sitting squarely on the shallow seabed.

Operations are underway to re-float the vessel, but it is expected that the vessel will be sold to breakers and make the short trip across the gulf to the shores of Alang, India for scrapping.

The Qing was built in 1982 for Home Lines as the m/v Atlantic. She was very popular on the New York to Bermuda Route. The ship also operated under the Premier Cruises Banner as the StarShip Atlantic offering 3 and 4 day cruises from Port Canaveral to the Bahamas and Private Island. Just before becoming Qing, she operated as MSC Cruises' MSC Melody sailing cruises throughout the Mediterranean and sailing from South Africa in the off season.
