Royal Caribbean's Empress of the Seas To Sail From Cape Liberty, Bayonne, NJ to Bermuda, New England, Canada

 RETURN TO NYCRUISEINFO.com

Empress of the Seas Cape Liberty Sailings 2020
Royal Caribbean's Empress of the Seas Returns to New York in 2020 Sailing to Bermuda, New England and Canada.

Although there has not been any formal announcement or press releases, Royal Caribbean's Empress of the Seas is coming to New York in the Spring of 2020. This 1990 built mid-sized ship is ideal for the New York (Cape Liberty NJ) to Bermuda cruise circuit.

The Empress of the Seas is just the right size to dock directly at Front Street in Hamilton and also call at Saint Georges, Bermuda. The convenience of being docked at the center of town offers the passengers access to public transportation, shopping and easy access to the beach.

The Empress of the Seas is no stranger to the dual ports of call in Bermuda, having called  at the island nation for numerous years. Being replaced with larger ships, the Empress of the Seas was moved to Europe and used by a number of Royal Caribbean divisions / partners before returning to Florida for Bahamas, Key West and Cuba cruises. When US policy on Cuba and Educational Tourism changed, she was prohibited from calling at Cuba and Royal Caribbean seeked new employment for this mid-sized ship.

The Empress of the Seas will bring back traditional cruises to Bermuda and provide cruise passengers the convenience of jumping on and off the ship in the center of all the action.

In addition to the Bermuda Cruises, the Empress of the Seas will sail from New York (Cape Liberty Bayonne, NJ) on New England / Canada Itineraries including Round Trip and also open jaw cruises ending in Montreal Canada (or embarking in Montreal).

Built in 1990 and extensively refurbished in 2016, the 2,270 passenger ship has 12 passenger decks measures 692 ft in length, 100ft wide and weighs in at 48,563 tons. She has a crew of 668.

MSC Cruises Private Island Unveils Its Private Island to First Cruise Passengers on December 5, 2019

MSC Cruises Private Island Marine Reserve Ocean Cay now open for cruise guests.
MSC Ship At Ocean Cay Bahamas, MSC Cruises' Private Island

MSC Cruises welcomed the first passengers to its new private island in the Bahamas, Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve.

The long-awaited opening is a milestone in a complex undertaking that was first announced in December 2015. MSC Cruises has transformed an industrial sand excavation site into a cruise destination, while working with environmental engineers and other experts to revitalize the surrounding ocean beds, marine life and endangered coral.

Preserving coral colonies during construction

This has involved removing 7,500 tons of scrap metal and dispatching a team of divers and marine biologists to carefully remove individual hard coral colonies from debris on the ocean bed and move them to an approved location outside the construction area. More than 75,000 plants and shrubs were planted across the island to create a bio-diverse and sustainable environment.

In the coming months, MSC Cruises plans to introduce a Conservation Center on the island to serve as an active base for coral education and research. The restored natural beauty of the ocean and beaches is at the heart of the Ocean Cay experience, with the surrounding waters to become a flourishing marine reserve.

Tours to discover the marine life

Shore excursion offerings, including snorkeling, stand-up paddle boarding and kayaking, facilitate discovery of the marine life up close.

Visitors can purchase a spa treatment or relax in a private cabana, stroll a village with Bahamian arts and crafts by local artisans or grab a bite at the complimentary Seakers Food Court or from one of six food trucks. Multiple bars are positioned around the island. Evening events including Junkanoo parades and lighthouse light shows.

Creating something with a higher purpose

‘Having the first guests arrive on the island is a moment of great pride for all of us at MSC Cruises,’ Executive Chairman Pierfrancesco Vago said. ‘Ocean Cay is founded on a deep commitment to ecological principles – beliefs that shape everything from how venues are built, to how the island is run, to the kinds of activities featured on the island. We wanted to create for our guests something sustainable, with a higher purpose. Ocean Cay is not just a vacation island. It is a unique marine reserve where people and nature thrive in harmony.’

Following today’s first call, all four of MSC Cruises’ North America-based ships — MSC Armonia, MSC Divina, MSC Seaside and MSC Meraviglia — will visit Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve on different days.

GENTING CRUISE LINES CELEBRATES KEEL-LAYING OF SECOND GLOBAL CLASS SHIP AND START OF NEW SERIES OF UNIVERSAL CLASS SHIPS AT MV WERFTEN

Keel Laying of Dream Cruises Global Dream at Germany's MV Werften
Artists Rendering of Dream Cruises' New Global Dream whose Keel Laying happened on December 9, 2019

10 December 2019 – “The keel-laying of the the second 208,000 gross ton Global Class for Dream Cruises took place on 9 December 2019 at MV WERFTEN in Rostock. The midship section of the Global Class ship was produced in Rostock and the transfer of the first 160,000 gross ton midship section for the first Global Class ship – the Global Dream – from Rostock to the covered dock of Wismar was completed only two weeks ago. At 235m long and 20 decks high, the mid-section was the largest man-made ship structure to be towed from one location to another.

The keel-laying for the second Global Class ship was attended by guests from the State and Federal Government, business leaders as well as media representatives from Germany and Asia. Western-Pomerania’s Economics Minister Harry Glawe, Genting Hong Kong’s Chairman and CEO Tan Sri KT Lim, Deputy CEO Hui Lim, Group President Colin Au, Genting Cruise Lines President Kent Zhu, Dream Cruises President Michael Goh and MV WERFTEN’s CEO Peter Fetten. All participants placed the traditional lucky coins on the keel block before the 95m high gantry crane lowered the 470 ton section into position.

“We are here for the keel laying of the second Global Class ship” said Tan Sri KT Lim,”But more importantly, we are starting the design and building of the next series of ships, the Universal Class ships, the first to be delivered by now at the end of 2022.”

Cruising is a niche 2.5% market share of the travel industry and marketed often as an alternative to land vacation. The Universal Class ships, on the other hand, are designed, built and operated with “Complete Freedom” - making cruising more like a land vacation”. At 88,000 gross tons in size and accommodating 2,000 guests, the ships are large enough to have all the main amenities of larger cruise ships but without the crowded public space and lines of 5,000+ passenger cruise ships. Genting will operate the Universal Class ships for global hotel brands, who want to enter the cruise industry, but are unable to do so as almost all building slots are occupied till the end of the decade.

“The major hospitality brands are uncompromising in protecting their brand image and the Universal Class ships are perfect as they carry the most trusted and respected “Made in Germany” label. They are designed with the highest safety and environmental standards, including LNG propulsion, says Peter Fetten, President and CEO of MV WERFTEN. “We will be an experienced yard by then, having delivered two 208,000 gross tons Global Class ships, the largest to be built in Germany and the Universal Class ships will keep MV WERFTEN with a full orderbook till 2024.”

Economics Minister Harry Glawe said: "The keel laying is another milestone in the ambitious cruise shipbuilding program of MV WERFTEN. The employees face up to the complex challenges and continuing their successful development. As a result, this secures thousands of jobs, increases added value and contributes to economic stability in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern."

Carnival Panorama Christened In Long Beach By Godmother Vanna White.

Carnival Panorama Mexican Riviera Cruises Christened by Vanna White
Carnival Panorama Christened By Godmother Vanna White in Long Beach California.

The arrival of Carnival Panorama – the line’s first new ship on the West Coast in 20 years – was celebrated in true Carnival Cruise Line fashion with Wheel of Fortune’s Vanna White serving as godmother and officially naming the ship during a memorable ceremony on board.
White delivered poignant comments during which she spoke about her love of cruising and the commitment she shares with Carnival to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, as well as the cruise line’s relationship with Wheel of Fortune, which she has co-hosted for the past 37 years.
Then, in a nod to her role on Wheel of Fortune, America’s Game®, White turned a series of letters spelling out PANORAMA that triggered the release of a bottle of Moet champagne to officially name the ship.
“I’m incredibly flattered and honored to be the godmother of this ship.” said White. “Naming Carnival Panorama was truly a special moment, and one I will never forget. I look forward to sailing on her in the future.”
The festivities also included a ribbon-cutting ceremony for Carnival Kitchen, a first-in-fleet culinary center that offers more than 15 different interactive cooking, baking and decorating demonstrations.
Joining Carnival President Christine Duffy at the ribbon cutting were Carnival’s team of “Culinary All Stars” including Guy Fieri whose Burger Joint and Smokehouse Brewhouse are featured on Carnival Panorama, as well as Emeril Lagasse and Rudi Sodamin, who each will have new restaurants, Emeril’s Bistro 1396 and Rudi’s Seagrill, respectively, on the new Mardi Gras when it debuts next year.
“One of the things we are most proud of is the delicious food we offer across our fleet,” said Duffy. “To celebrate Carnival Panorama’s inaugural with our very own ‘Feast of Fun’ featuring our amazing culinary team both on board and through our partnerships really added to the celebration.”
The grand opening of the first Sky Zone trampoline park at sea was celebrated with Duffy and Sky Zone CEO Jeff Platt cutting the ribbon followed by the first participants checking out the high-flying action within the two-level, 3,000-square-foot facility.
The day included a return of the Carnival AirShip, a 128-foot-long blimp emblazoned with the line’s Choose Fun tag line and concluded with a massive fireworks display that lit up the Long Beach sky.
Following an inaugural three-day cruise, Carnival Panorama will launch year-round seven-day Mexican Riviera service from Long Beach, Calif., Dec. 14, departing every Saturday on week-long voyages to Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan and Cabo San Lucas.

LINDBLAD EXPEDITIONS HOLDINGS, INC. CELEBRATES KEEL LAYING OF THE NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC RESOLUTION

Artists Rendering of Linblad Expeditions' National Geographic Resolution Keel Laying Ceremony
Artists Rendering of Linblad Expeditions' National Geographic Resolution Keel Laying Ceremony

Lindblad Expeditions Holdings, Inc., a global provider of expedition cruises and adventure travel experiences, and Ulstein Group, Norwegian shipbuilder and ship designer, celebrated the keel laying of Lindblad’s second polar new build at the CRIST shipyard in Gdynia, Poland.   The occasion also served as the official naming ceremony of the vessel.

National Geographic Resolution was named to honor Captain James Cook, the legendary explorer who was the first to circumnavigate Antarctica, cross the Antarctic Circle, and the first European to reach Hawaii.   While he captained several ships in his career, his favorite was the MS Resolution.
Scheduled for delivery in Q4 2021, she is sister ship to the National Geographic Endurance which will make her inaugural voyage in April 2020.  The 126-guest Polar Class 5 National Geographic Resolution will feature Ulstein’s signature X-BOW®, a distinctive bow that provides fuel efficiency while significantly improving guest comfort in rough seas; and a very high ice class for access deep into Polar Regions.  The ship’s expanded fuel and water tanks provide for extended operations in remote areas; while the zero-speed stabilizers will ensure stability, whether at zero speed or full steam ahead.
A highlight of the ceremony was the traditional laying of the commemorative silver coin, the Hawaii Sesquicentennial half dollar, struck in 1928 by the United States Bureau of the Mint in honor of the 150th anniversary of Captain James Cook's landing in Hawaii.  The rare vintage coin is owned by Sven Lindblad and depicts Captain Cook on the obverse and a Hawaiian chieftain on the reverse.

Artists Rendering of Hapag-Lloyd's Latest Luxury Expedition Ship - Hanseatic Inspiration - Named in Hamburg Germany

On October 11, 2019, Hapag-Lloyd Cruises christened their newest luxury expedition ship the Hanseatic Inspiration in Hamburg, Germany. Highlights of the event include:
  • The introduction of a class of expedition ship
  • Laura Dekker names the international ship from a pontoon
  • 230+ invited guests take to the water to watch spectacular 3D projection
  • Evening hosted by Ranga Yogeshwar
  • Live performance by two-time Echo winner Oonagh
On the evening of 11 October 2019, the naming ceremony for the HANSEATIC inspiration, the second of three new Hapag-Lloyd Cruises’ expedition ships, was held in the port of Hamburg. Godmother Laura Dekker, the youngest person to circumnavigate the globe single-handed, released the mechanism for the traditional champagne bottle from a pontoon placed in the water for the occasion. Around 230 invited guests watched the naming ceremony of Hapag-Lloyd Cruises’ bi-lingual expedition ship from the Elbe River. The HANSEATIC inspiration was transformed into a ceremonial stage as eleven high-powered projectors put on a twelve-minute multimedia show on the outside of the ship that took the audience on a virtual cruise through the destinations its expeditions will visit. Science journalist Ranga Yogeshwar hosted the event. The new expedition class, made up of the HANSEATIC nature, HANSEATIC inspiration and HANSEATIC spirit, is being financed by an investment from the parent TUI Group.

Windstar Announces 2021 Alaska Cruise Onboard The Extended Star Breeze.

Artists Rendering of the Extended Star Breeze - Scheduled to Sail in Alaska 2021
Artists Rendering of the Extended Star Breeze - Scheduled to Sail in Alaska 2021

Windstar Cruises announces its 2021 Alaska season today, offering nine different journeys from June through September on four unique itineraries, including a new seven-day option from Vancouver to Juneau and the reverse. Scenic Alaska will feature coastal wilderness cruising along the Canadian Inside Passage, as well as time in Alaska’s Misty Fjords plus Tracy or Endicott Arms, with stops in Ketchikan, Sitka, Skagway (a first-time port for Windstar), and Juneau. Windstar also will offer far-reaching Cruise Tours for the comprehensive Alaska experience combining coastal cruises with overland explorations to Denali and Fairbanks in 2021.

“We achieved the highest guest ratings in the company’s history during our second season in Alaska in 2019, proving that Windstar is the absolute best way to experience the majesty of Alaska,” says John Delaney, President of Windstar Cruises. “I was fortunate to have the opportunity to sail for a few days during our Alaska season and was able to visit the small native community of the Inian Islands and to kayak deep up in Tracy Arm –it was an incredible experience that is truly a life-changing adventure. Our 2019 season sold out quickly, and we encourage people to book early for 2021,” he added.

While Windstar’s popular 11 (and more)-day itineraries in Alaska allow plenty of time for scenic cruising and in-depth exploration, Windstar’s new seven-day cruise is in response to guest demand for shorter options to explore Alaska in an immersive way. Guests will see something spectacular every day, with no days spent “at sea,” allowing them to get the most out of their Alaskan cruise in a shorter amount of time.

With new Alaska itineraries and ports comes the opportunity for new shore excursions and experiences, including exclusive offerings as part of the line’s innovative Signature Expeditions
program, where a team of six experts are on board sharing the history of the region, cultural tales, scientific discoveries, and insider knowledge.

New 2021 Signature Expeditions include Zodiac cruises and kayaking in Icy Bay, a remote fjord near Prince William Sound that’s part of the Wrangell-Saint Elias Wilderness. In Barry Arm, three glaciers flow from the Chugach Mountains into the fjord, making the area magnificently picturesque. The location is perfect for Zodiac cruises and kayaking with Windstar’s Expedition Team because the area is relatively ice free with smooth waters.

New 2021 shore excursions include experiences like taking the vintage White Pass & Yukon narrow-gauge train from Skagway through a panorama of mountains, glaciers, waterfalls, tunnels, and historic sites, or embarking on a Glacier Point wilderness safari, including catamaran cruising along ice-scoured fjords, hiking through dense rain-forest, and paddling a canoe on a mountain lake to the stunning face of an ice wall.

In addition to unique itineraries and excursions, Windstar also excels at bringing Alaska’s local bounty on board for guests to enjoy with their chefs’ focus on sourcing local ingredients, which will continue in 2021. These tasty items include seasonal huckleberries, reindeer and venison sausage, birch syrup, and of course seafood like King and Sockeye Salmon, Pacific Ling Cod, and King Crab.

All 2021 Windstar Alaska sailings will take place aboard the re-imagined 312-passenger Star Breeze, with 50 new suites, two new restaurants, an enhanced spa and fitness center, and more. Rates for 2021 Alaska sailings and cruise tours start at $2,999 per guest.

Windstar Cruises Star Breeze Being Lenghened - Watch the Video and See the Latest Photo

October 17, 2019It’s only appropriate that the culture that gave birth to the Renaissance is where Windstar Cruises ushers in a new era as the leader in small ship cruising by making the final cut to the hull of Star Breeze to “stretch” the first of its three ships and begin the process of inserting a new 84-foot mid-section(25.6meters)that will help evolve and transform the Windstar  experience.

The first Windstar ship to emerge from this transformation, Star Breeze, will sail from Barcelona to Lisbon on February 20, 2020, and celebrate re-inaugural activities in North America at the Port of Miami on March 19, 2020. While many a ship has been “stretched,” as it is referred to in the cruise industry, the complexity and significant undertaking with Star Breeze(and sister ships Star Legend and Star Pride in 2020) is not just cosmetic or experience-based. It also involves removing and replacing the engines to ensure a cleaner,
more environmentally-friendly operation as the ships sail through some of the world’s most beautiful waters and call at small, enchanting ports for decades to come.

The $250 Million Star Plus Initiative is the most complex and comprehensive small ship lengthening, engine replacement, and renovation project undertaken in cruising, and we are very proud to be working with Fincantieri, the leader in major cruise ship renovations, stated Windstar Cruises President John Delaney. The slightly larger ships and new enhancements will significantly build upon the signature onboard environment Windstar is famous for. The social and friendly public spaces on the ships create a welcome chemistry with guests and the crew. This is the first of three new mid-ship sections to be constructed and inserted as part of Windstar’s $250 Million Star Plus Initiative, which is committed to the expansion and transformation of the cruise line’s three Star-class vessels.

In addition to the all-important propulsion  system and “back-of-house” investment, what guests will welcome most are the two new restaurants including the eclectic, Spanish-styled Cuadro 44 by Anthony Sasso and a modern, alfresco Star Grill by Steven Raichlen capitalizing on the ships’ increase in deck space. That additional space also translates into anew pool and whirlpool on the upper deck, are-imagined, world-class spa and fitness center, a new retail shop, and more.In addition, every bathroom on the ship with be re-built and fitted to modern luxury standards.

The new 84-foot (25.6meters) mid-section will also welcome most of the 50 new suites. With the new section, Star Breeze will now be able to accommodate 312 passengers (previously the ship accommodated 212 guests). The expanded ship will also allow for more crew and maintain the enviable 1.5-to-1 guest-to-service staff ratio.

Vice President of Fleet Operations for Windstar Christopher Prelog said,“This is a momentous undertaking for Windstar and a major milestone. Thanks to our partners at Fincantieri,we are literally witnessing the evolution of a cruise line.

Star Breeze and her sister ships have always been coveted for their beauty, pleasing lines, and cozy yet seemingly spacious environments. The significant investment and the transformation of these ships will be stunning, and we are all eagerfor our guests to experience the renaissance of Windstar Cruises.

Vice President Ship Repair and Conversion of the Fincantieri Services Division Andrew Toso stated,Today is a big day. A proud day. A day of amazing accomplishment by Windstar, Fincantieri, and our shipyard in Palermo.Cutting Star Breeze in two, inserting a new section, replacing the main engines and diesel generators is evidence of our ability in these kinds of highly sophisticated and complex operations, which require engineering and design skills, as well as project management competence that represent the state-of-the-art in the industry.

Windstar is transforming three of its Star-class ships Star Breeze, Star Legend, and Star Prideand renovating each ship in succession at Fincantieri’s Shipyard in Palermo, Sicily, Italy. Work will be complete in late 2020.The second ship to undergo the transformation, Star Legend, will debut in Barcelona on July 2, 2020. The third and final ship, Star Pride, will be complete with the departure of Star Pride from the shipyard in fall of 2020, with her first cruise sailing from Barcelona on November 20, 2020
