Windstar Cuts the First Steel at Italian Shipyard Fincantieri as the Innovative Small Ship Cruise Line’s $250 Million Star Plus Initiative Becomes Reality

Windstar cruises lengthening of Star class ships - steel cutting, Star Pride, Star Breeze, Star Legend
Fincantieri’s Vice President of Ship Repair and Conversions Andrew Toso, Shipyard Director Gianni Salvagno and Windstar Cruises’ Vice President of Expansion Projects John Gunner in Trieste, Italy (left to right)

April 2, 2019 at Fincantieri’s shipyard “Arsenale Triestino San Marco”, in Trieste, Italy, John Gunner, Vice President of Expansion Projects for Seattle-based Windstar Cruises, pushed the button which activated the torch to make the first cut in the new steel that will become the first of three new ships sections as part of Windstar’s $250 Million Star Plus Initiative.

The $250 Million Star Plus Initiative is the most complex and comprehensive small ship lengthening, engine replacement, and renovation project undertaken in cruising. Windstar will take half of its entire fleet – Star Breeze, Star Legend, and Star Pride – and renovate each ship in succession. The work on the first of the three ships begins on Star Breeze in October 2019 and shall end with the departure of the Star Pride from the yard in November 2020. This steel cutting marks the beginning of true project construction. The popular ships will be cut in half to allow the installation of a new stepped mid-body section that will lengthen each vessel by approximately 25 meters. The total capacity of the “new” expanded ships will be 312 guests, and additional staff will be hired in order to maintain the line’s impressive 1.5 to 1 guest-to-service staff ratio.

The new sections will be built in Trieste and then will be transported south by barge to the Fincantieri yard in Palermo, Sicily, Italy to be inserted into the iconic Windstar ships along with the new engines. The timeline requires the new sections to be fabricated from April through September, shipped in October, and then inserted into Star Breeze so that she can be completed in time for her arrival for re-inaugural activities at the port of Miami on March 19, 2020.

The extension and modernization project is being performed by the “Ship Repair & Conversion” part of the Services Division of Fincantieri, one of the world’s largest shipbuilding groups and number one for diversification and innovation that has built 89 cruise ships from 1990 to today with 54 new ships currently being designed or built in the group’s yards. The company also has a deeply rooted experience in cruise ship conversion, which consolidates its leadership in this highly specialized naval transformation sector.
The Johnson Studio at Cooper Carry in New York, led by Ray Chung, Director of Design, has been tasked with creating modern and inviting design aesthetics for the new public spaces and 50 new suites. In addition to the suites, there will be a new pool area, restaurants, a spa & wellness center, and enhanced “living room deck space.”
Gunner pointed out, “This is not about just cutting a ship in half and making it bigger. We are replacing the engines and ‘back of house’ too, so that these ships deliver on their promise of visiting smaller ports and special waterways of the world with a softer environmental footprint for generations to come.”
Andrew Toso, Vice President Ship Repair and Conversion of the Fincantieri Services Division, stated, “The considerable experience gained with major naval projects undertaken over recent years, and the Windstar program that we are officially starting today, consolidates Fincantieri’s position as the reference point worldwide for this kind of highly sophisticated and complex operations. We are very proud that Windstar, a prestigious new client for our company, has chosen us for these strategic works which will require an extremely high level of engineering competence and project management.”
Reservations can be made for cruises aboard the post-Star Plus Initiative Star Breeze and Star Legend including Star Breeze’s Colors of Key West & Central America 10-day voyage from Miami to Colón, Panama on March 20, 2020; sailing from Miami will be a first for the Seattle-based company.

Holland America Line to Call Next Pinnacle Class Ship Ryndam

Artists Rendering of Holland America's 4th Pinnacle Ship Ryndam being built at Italy's Fincantieri
Artists Rendering of Holland America's 4th Pinnacle Ship Ryndam.

In a nod to its long line of historic ships that helped build the foundation for cruising as we know it today, Holland America Line announced that its next Pinnacle Class ship will be called Ryndam. The newbuild, due for delivery in May 2021, will be the fourth ship in the company’s history to carry the name.

Ryndam will be similar to sister ships Koningsdam and Nieuw Statendam, weighing 99,500 tons and carrying 2,666 guests. As the third in the series, Ryndam will feature enhanced Pinnacle Class amenities and innovations, along with Holland America Line hallmarks that drive one of the highest guest repeat rates in the industry.

Holland America Line honors the timeless tradition of cruising while also embracing new innovations for today’s travelers, and the name Ryndam reflects the unique history of this company while honoring previous ships that were progressive in their time as this last Ryndam will be,” said Orland Ashford, Holland America Line’s president. “From the first Ryndam more than 100 years ago to the most recent, the namesake ships have been beloved by our guests. The next Ryndam will bring new life to one of the most notable series of vessels in our history.”

The steel cutting for Ryndam, signifying the official beginning of the building process, was held March 13, 2019 at Fincantieri’s shipyard in Marghera, Italy. This will be the 17th ship constructed for Holland America Line by the Italian shipbuilder, which most recently delivered Nieuw Statendam.

Holland America Line’s Historic Ships Named Ryndam
The first Ryndam was part of the Holland America Line fleet from 1901 to 1929, starting as Rijndam before receiving the English spelling in 1923. In 1927 Ryndam I became the first Holland America Line ship to sail a world cruise, although it was chartered as a floating school at sea for that voyage. The second Ryndam served from 1951 to 1973, and the third sailed in the fleet from 1993 through 2015, when it was transferred to sister brand P&O Australia and now cruises as Pacific Aria

UnCruise Adds Summer Expedition Program in Hawaii

UnCruise Safari Explorer - Yacht Sailings in Hawaii July and August 2019
UnCruise Safari Explorer - Yacht Sailings in Hawaii 2019

Building on its history of adventure cruising in the Hawaiian Islands, UnCruise Adventures announces its first foray into summer island cruising with the addition of six departures in July and August 2019. The week-long small ship cruises sail round-trip Moloka’i and explore Lana’i, the Big Island of Hawai’i, and sea turtle rich waters off West Maui.

UnCruise Adventures’ 36-guest Safari Explorer has operated Hawaii cruises from November through April since 2011.  A new week-long summer itinerary visits four islands with included activities exploring land and sea—kayaking, hiking, swimming, snorkeling, paddle boarding, wildlife searches and skiff excursions.  Cultural heritage is a key component of the UnCruise experience in the islands.

“We’ve had our eye on operating in Hawaii during the summer, and with current demand, the time is right,” said UnCruise Adventures’ owner and CEO Dan Blanchard. “Hawaii is a popular vacation destination all year, and now summer travelers can take advantage of the convenience of traveling between islands by yacht.”

The new Aloha Hawaii Adventure Cruise sails round-trip Moloka’i, a lesser visited island with an authentic Hawaii culture and vibe.  A local Halawa Valley family with ancient Hawaiian lineage invites guests to their home to “talk story” about island lore and learn how to make poi from taro root. A hike guided by locals meanders past taro patches and ends at a waterfall where those inclined can take a dip. An evening pa’ina feast in town is a true Hawaiian celebration with traditional local cuisine, music and dancing.

On the island of Lana’i, hike to Sweetheart Rock for sweeping views and visit the Lana’i Culture and Heritage Center. Snorkel off West Maui at a turtle cleaning station—where turtles visit for shell cleaning by small fish—and find yourself swimming with green sea turtles and other colorful fish. An evening snorkel in Honomalino Bay draws Giant Pacific Manta ray’s up close in a feeding area.  Kayak through lava tubes off the Big Island of Hawai’i and stroll through historic Kailua. Marine life abounds with sightings of colorful reef fish, turtles, whales, dolphins, reef sharks and manta rays.

Meals on board are fresh and innovative with produce and meat sourced on Moloka’i. Sustainable seafood is sourced from local fishermen at the Honolulu fish market.

Dignitaries from the Cruise Line and Shipyard Witness Steel Cutting for Quark New Expedition Vessel

Brodosplit, Croatia, Jan. 28, 2019 – Quark Expeditions, the leader in polar adventures for three decades, celebrated the steel-cutting of its pioneering new ship today, launching an exciting new chapter in polar exploration.

The ceremony took place at the shipyard and museum of Quark Expeditions’ build partner, Brodosplit, and was attended by senior executives from both companies, including President of Quark Expeditions, Andrew White, CEO of DIV Group, Tomislav Debeljak and CEO of Brodosplit Zoran Kunkera.

The new ship from Quark Expeditions is the first of its kind, combining leading-edge technology, long-range operational capability and advanced safety systems to reach new frontiers in polar exploration. “Every aspect of the ship has been built with one thing in mind: continuing to redefine what is possible in polar adventure,” said White. “We’ve created a ship unsurpassed in its class not only by partnering with industry leaders like Brodosplit and LMG Marin, who are as committed as we are to pushing the boundaries, but also by consulting with our own polar experts and Expedition Leaders, who know better than anyone else what guests want out of their polar experience.”

The vessel, at 128 meters long, with a beam of 21.5 meters and at 13,500 Gross Tons which will set sail in 2020, will accommodate up to 200 passengers in spacious cabins and public areas and feature an unparalleled array of adventure options, allowing guests to maximize opportunities for spontaneous adventure off the ship while enjoying superior comfort on it. “This ship will be more than just a ship,” added White. “It will be an unrivalled operational base for polar adventures. Our guests travel with Quark to maximize their expedition experience, push their boundaries and revel in the magic of the polar regions. With this new ship, in the hands of the most experienced expedition team in the industry, we will get our guests further into the polar regions, seeing and doing more of what they have to offer, in a vessel of exceptional comfort.”

Featuring an interior Zodiac hangar and four embarkation points, state-of-the-art dual helicopters with simultaneously operable helidecks, a best-in-class 70-day operational range, and an array of cutting-edge safety features, the vessel will help Quark Expeditions deliver the thrill of polar adventure in new and unmatched ways while ensuring its guests’ comfort, enjoyment and safety. Passengers will benefit from eleven different cabin styles, modern spa and fitness facilities, indoor and outdoor dining options, and a rapid Zodiac and helicopter deployment system that allows for safe and efficient movement on and off the ship.

Quark Expeditions Steel Cut for New Exploration Vessel in Croatia

The ship’s numerous innovations will also minimize its environmental footprint to an extent previously unseen for a vessel of comparable size, including a sophisticated water treatment system, state-of-the-art waste handling,  a leading-edge heat recovery system that recycles excess energy back into the ship, and the use of entirely recyclable materials to construct it. The dynamic positioning technology will also mean no need to anchor – avoiding damage to sensitive seabed ecosytems.
The new vessel will go on sale in Spring 2019, with the launch of it’s inaugural Antarctic 2020-2021 season.

“We are proud of our long list of firsts, like the first commercial passenger circumnavigation of Antarctica,” said White. “We designed this ship to keep adding to those firsts in what we consider the most breathtaking places on our planet. It is our combination of institutional knowledge and technological innovation that makes a design like this possible. The polar regions are both spectacular and unforgiving. Our new ship will take people there safely and comfortably while giving them experiences to cherish forever and allowing them to appreciate the purity and majesty of nature without disturbing it.”

Floor Plan - Owners Suite - Ritz Carlton Yacht Collection

The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection is delighted to reveal industry defining accommodations at sea through thoughtfully designed, forward-thinking suites, which perfectly blend timeless elegance and a warm, inviting atmosphere.

Created to feel like a private yacht, the vessel will uniquely feature one designer, resulting in a unified flow of design which is refined, relaxed and unlike any other accommodations at sea.
“The distinct design of The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection places us in a new space within the industry where the vessel is a destination in and of itself,” stated Douglas Prothero, CEO of The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection. “The design of our inaugural yacht and exceptional suites has been a collaborative effort and one that I am particularly excited about as we were able to envision and build a yacht from the ground up that will deliver an unparalleled guest experience.”

The interior design of the inaugural yacht was imagined by Tillberg Design of Sweden in collaboration with The Ritz-Carlton.

Each facet of luxury yachting was considered to promise a voyage which combines the lifestyle of the resorts of The-Ritz Carlton with the casual freedom of a yachting vacation. Boasting a residential feel, the suites’ design inspiration includes the sleek and contemporary look of The Ritz-Carlton Residences in Sunny Isles, Miami Beach and Los Angeles, and offers a spacious setting, innovative marine qualities and some of the most design- forward yacht interiors in the world.

“A yacht evokes the feeling of freedom and the ability to go where you want in the world at your own pace. The inaugural yacht of The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection is designed to reflect this emotion by making guests feel as though they are onboard their own private yacht,” said Fredrik Johansson, Owner and Executive Project Director of Tillberg Design of Sweden.

“In addition to a casually elegant atmosphere in the suites, dining venues and open areas to relax, there will be plenty of little escapes and private corners of the yacht, really giving guests the ability to define their experience.”

Complementing the unprecedented itineraries and signature experiences of The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, the design of the yacht’s 149 suites is an integral aspect of what sets the vessel apart. In addition to offering a high percentage of large suites, the yacht will also feature several innovative loft suites, a unique two-story accommodation that is ideal for in-suite entertaining. All suites will feature a private terrace, floor to ceiling windows and great ceiling heights, resulting in some of the most airy and expansive guestrooms in the luxury cruise category.

Through a soundproof, blind wall, select suites also have the option to be combined into larger, open-concept spaces allowing for more flexibility when selecting accommodations. All suites feature the luxurious amenities that visitors would find at a Ritz-Carlton on land, including a king bed, double vanity bathroom, luxury linens and more. Perfectly marrying form and function, the light-filled accommodations will connect guests to the seas and harbors they are sailing.

The specially designed yacht measures 190-meters and can accommodate up to 298 passengers. The onboard experience will reflect the sublime comfort and legendary guest service for which the iconic Ritz-Carlton brand is recognized. The yachts will also have one of the highest crew to guest ratios in luxury cruising, with almost one crew member for every guest. Each suite has access to a Personal Concierge, guests’ single onboard touch point there to ensure a flawless, seamless journey from beginning to end.

In addition to unparalleled accommodations, guests of The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection will enjoy an all-inclusive luxury experience including onboard activities and entertainment, beverages, multiple dining venues, onboard gratuities, WiFi and watersports from the yacht’s marina. Signature experiences available for an additional fee include a culinary experience at the yacht’s specialty restaurant designed by three Michelin-starred Chef Sven Elverfeld of The Ritz-Carlton, Wolfsburg, spa treatments at the signature Ritz-Carlton Spa, and immersive excursions offered through The Shore Collection. Rumours are circulating that Russian interests are close to entering the cruise industry on a larger scale. Russia, which in the 1970s - 1990s, had a significant presence in the cruise indusrty - especially in the German, UK and Australian Markets. Over the years the Russians lost their strong hold as their fleet aged and the Russian govenment made other areas of the economy the focus.

Now rumors are circulating that orders may be placed shortly for a series of modern cruise ships and exploration vessels - with both private interest and government ties.

Only time will tell how / if the rumor(s) come to fruition.
