Sea Cloud Sails the Transatlantic Cruise - Crossing the Atlantic Without Engine Power

Sea Cloud Sea Cloud Cruises Makes Wind Powered Transatlantic Voyage
Sea Cloud Sea Cloud Cruises Makes Wind Powered Transatlantic Voyage

During this year's Atlantic crossing, the flagship of the Hamburg-based shipping
company, their Sea Cloud, sailed approx. 2,300 nautical miles (approx. 4.260
kilometers) under sails only. “Around 100 miles from the final destination, Santo
Domingo, engines were needed to support the remaining trip,” reported Captain
Sergey Komakin, master of the four masted barque Sea Cloud. Even for a tall ship
like the Sea Cloud, sailing 96% of the time without engines, only with the help of
the trade winds, is not typical for travel in the Atlantic Ocean.

“This trip is very unique,” stated Captain Komakin. On the legendary voyage from Cape Verde to the Caribbean, the Captain and his crew were able to set all 30 sails of the 360 feet (109.5 meter) windjammer, and stop the engines. The northeast trade winds pressed at 15 to 20 knots (approx. 28 to 36 km/h, 4 to 5 wind speeds) into the 32,000 square ft. (3,000 square meter) sail area. The Captain didn’t need to start the engines for 17 days, which is a Sea Cloud Cruises’ record!  In the year prior, the Captain of the Sea Cloud II set the sails for 85% of the time during this voyage, so set the bar high for the 2019 crossing.

For the 53 guests and 60 crew members on the Sea Cloud, the trip to the
Caribbean developed into a unique experience over the two-week trip. “Day
after day it got a little warmer, with ideal sailing conditions from the gentle Atlantic
swell,” raved the Captain. The pass zone between the equator and the 30th north
longitude was once the preferred route for sailing merchant ships on their way
from Europe to America, and now centuries later Sea Cloud Cruises still follows
this legendary route.

The latest Atlantic crossing on their flagship was also a dream trip for Sea Cloud
Cruises. The Hamburg shipping company attaches great importance to the
sustainability factor in its concept for exclusive sea cruises, under full sail.

"We have deliberately differentiated ourselves from the currently booming cruise
market for almost 40 years now," emphasizes Sea Cloud Cruises CEO Daniel
Schäfer. "We strive to offer trips that protect the environment, and are in harmony
with nature, and with the people who reside in the regions we visit," he also noted.

Sea Cloud, built in 1931 as a private yacht, and its modern sister, Sea Cloud II,
have sails set and the engines switched off as often as possible, on all trips. The
demand for these decelerating and natural cruises is growing rapidly, and Sea
Cloud Cruises will be launching a third ship this year. Sea Cloud Spirit’s maiden
voyage is set for August 29, and will follow the same sustainability criteria as its
two sister ships.

Since 1979, Sea Cloud Cruises has been one of the world’s top names in cruises. The Sea Cloud, celebrating her 90th birthday in 2021, and its younger sister Sea Cloud II, regularly appear with five stars each in the Berlitz Cruise Guide’s list and ranks under the best five cruise ships in the world.

Ship Trivia - What Was Unique About the Celebrity Edge's Naming / Christening.

Celebrity Edge Naming Ceremony with Royal Caribbean Leadership, the Captain and the Ship's Godmother Malala Yousafzai
Celebrity Edge Naming Ceremony with Royal Caribbean Leadership, the Captain and the Ship's Godmother Malala Yousafzai

On December 4, 2019, a powerful and emotional naming ceremony on board the Celebrity Edge—Celebrity Cruises' first new ship in more than half a decade and the first in an entirely new ship series in 13 years the official naming of the Celebrity Edge occurred.

In the presence of Captain Costas Nestoroudis, and the ship's godmother, Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai, the Celebrity Edge was christened with a giant bottle of WATER. Forgoing the traditional Champagne, Celebrity Cruises launched its newest ship by smashing a custom-made 18-liter bottle of Badoit across the ship's Parabolic Ultra Bow—a break from tradition that, perhaps, symbolizes a shift in how the Edge will innovate and evolve the cruise experience moving forward.

With 1,467 staterooms hosting more than 3,000 guests at a time, the Celebrity Edge features an outwardly-focused ship design that enhances the at-sea experience. This includes the addition of the 'Infinite Veranda,' stateroom balconies that blend seamlessly with living quarters—making rooms approximately 26 percent larger—and which feature an open-able motorized floor-to-ceiling window.

Windstar Cruises Canceling 20 Sailing Due to Abbestos Found on Star Breeze.

Windstar Cruises' Star Breeze Lengthening, Major Renovations and Engine Replacement in Italy Star Pride Star Legend
Windstar Cruises' Star Breeze Lengthening, Major Renovations and Engine Replacement in Italy

Windstar Cruises is canceling 20 sailings on Star Breeze, Star Pride and Star Legend due to construction delays that follow the discovery of asbestos during the ships' renovation.

The asbestos was NOT found in passenger areas and was found in the machinery area. The presence of asbestos was discovered during the removal and replacement of the ship's engines. Winstar is taking every precaution and is having the asbestos removed in an environmentally friendly manner.

Removal of the material will delay Star Breeze's refit, re-engineering and lengthening scheduled for completion on February 14, 2020 to May 4, 2020. On May 4th, the Star Breeze  will begin sailing in Latin America and the US West Coast.

The delay will have a trickle effect which will also impact the schedules for Star Legend and Star Pride, which will now complete their transformations on August 30, and November 29, 2020, respectively.

The canceled itineraries include Latin America, Alaska, Europe and transatlantic sailings.

Sea Cloud Cruises - NEW Cloud Spirit Open for Bookings Now - Early Discounts
Sea Cloud Cruises - NEW Cloud Spirit Open for Bookings Now

It is official, Sea Cloud Cruises will be taking firm bookings for the new Sea Cloud Spirit. Following careful inspection of the current status of the new build, the cruise company is convinced that “the Sea Cloud Spirit will be delivered on time,” announced CEO Daniel Schäfer. On August 29, 2020 the 452.7 feet (138 meter) long new ship will start its maiden voyage from Lisbon to Rome/Civitavecchia (Italy). Sea Cloud Cruises has extended the deadline until January 31, 2020 for the early booking discount for all voyages on the Sea Cloud Spirit.

Building upscale yachts today can be compared to building modern airplanes. “This was the case with building our new windjammer the Sea Cloud Spirit, where the highest standards applied in both comfort and sustainability,” noted Schäfer. The three-masted yacht will hold 136 guests, and is the first new built for the line since the Sea Cloud II in 2001. In the building process there is always the risk of delays. “In the interest of our guests, we wanted to be sure she would be delivered on time before starting official bookings,” mentioned Schäfer.

Since 1979, Sea Cloud Cruises has been one of the world’s top names in cruises. The Sea Cloud, celebrates her 90th birthday in 2021, and its younger sister Sea Cloud II, regularly appear with five stars each in the Berlitz Cruise Guide’s list and ranks under the best five cruise ships in the world.

Marco Polo 2021 110 Day Asia Cruise Replaced With Amazon, Northern Europe and More

Cruise & Maritime Voyages Replaces Marco Polo Asia / Hing Kong Grand Voyage With Northern Europe, Amazon and Caribbean Itineraries
Cruise & Maritime Voyages Replaces Marco Polo Asia / Hing Kong Grand Voyage With Northern Europe, Amazon and Caribbean Itineraries

Cruise and Maritime Voyages has decided to replace the January 2021,  Hong Kong / Asia itineraries of the Marco Polo with itineraries in along the Amazon, Norway, Iceland,  Cape Verde Islands, the Azores and the Caribbean.

The change in itinerary is a direct result of a drop in bookings for the 110 day cruise triggered by the   unrest in Hong Kong and travelers concerns.

CMV is replacing Marco Polo’s planned UK round-trip Asia programme with a new longer Amazon cruise and winter sailings to Norway and Iceland.

Marco Polo will now sail a 42-night cruise to the Amazon departing from Bristol Avonmouth  January 5, 2021, or passengers can stay on board for an extra two nights and disembark at London Tilbury. The itinerary also visits Cape Verde and the Azores plus the Caribbean.

Other new cruises for Marco Polo include northern Norway in February and March 2021. Another alternative, to search for the northern lights, is a 12-night March sailing from Tilbury to Iceland staying overnight in Reykjavik and visiting the Faroe, Orkney and Shetland islands.

Artists Rendering of the New Disney Wish - Obviously Concealing Some Unique Amenities Planned for the New Ship.

As previously announced in 2016 and 2017, Disney Cruise Line is building three additional cruise ships, each of them showcasing the immersive family entertainment, enchanting storytelling and unparalleled service that only Disney can deliver.

The ships will be built at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Germany.

“We pride ourselves on the unforgettable vacation experiences we deliver to our guests each and every day, and the expansion of our Disney fleet will allow us to create even more magical memories for families at sea and in incredible cruise destinations around the world,” said Robert A. Iger, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, The Walt Disney Company.

The three new ships will be powered by liquefied natural gas and, at approximately 144,000 gross tons and 1,250 guest staterooms, will be slightly larger than the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy.

First Details on Newest Ship
Disney Cruise Line revealed the highly anticipated name of the fifth Disney Cruise Line ship, the Disney Wish, as well as a first look at the ship’s elegant, three-story atrium and the iconic Disney character that will adorn the ship’s stern.
The Disney Wish is scheduled for delivery in late 2021 and is expected to set sail beginning in January 2022.

“There couldn’t be a better name for our incredible new ship because making wishes come true is part of the Disney DNA and is at the heart of so many of our cherished stories,” said Bob Chapek, Chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts.

A new rendering reveals a first look at the ship’s bright and airy three-story atrium, inspired by the beauty of an enchanted fairytale.

Stern characters – a beloved hallmark of Disney Cruise Line vessels – have been a tradition of the Disney fleet since the beginning and reflect the theme of each ship. For the Disney Wish, the ship’s stern will feature Rapunzel. Spirited, smart, curious and above all, adventurous, Rapunzel embodies the wish and desire to see and experience the world.

“Each Disney Cruise Line ship is unique, with a name that embodies the excitement of sailing with Disney and the power of our stories. The new ships will have the experiences our guests love, as well as all-new magic,” Chapek added.

Disney Cruise Line Reveals New Ship Names; New Private Island; and Artists Rendering Of The Ship's Atrium.

Video: Disney Cruise Line Reveals the Name for the Their New Ship in 2022, New Private Island Lighthouse Point in the Bahamas and Ship Interior Renderings - Video

Chairman Bob Chapek revealed the highly anticipated name of the fifth Disney Cruise Line ship, as well as a first look at the ship’s elegant, three-story atrium and the iconic Disney character that will adorn the ship’s stern. Chapek and Imagineer Joe Rohde also shared new details about plans for a second island destination for Disney Cruise Line in The Bahamas.

With a little help from Tinker Bell, Disney fans were the first to hear that Disney Wish will be the name of the fifth Disney Cruise Line ship. The Disney Wish is scheduled for delivery in late 2021 and is expected to set sail beginning in January 2022.

“There couldn’t be a better name for our incredible new ship because making wishes come true is part of the Disney DNA and is at the heart of so many of our cherished stories,” Chapek said.
A new rendering provided D23 attendees with a first look at the ship’s bright and airy three-story atrium, inspired by the beauty of an enchanted fairytale.

The three new ships will be powered by liquefied natural gas and, at approximately 144,000 gross tons and 1,250 guest staterooms, will be slightly larger than the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy.

Disney’s Second Bahamas Destination – Lighthouse Point
Also at the D23 Expo today, Disney revealed new information and two early conceptual artist renderings for its second island destination in The Bahamas, which is located on the breathtaking island of Eleuthera at a place called Lighthouse Point.

“With three new ships joining our fleet, we thought this would be an incredible opportunity to add another unique destination to our ports of call. We looked all over The Bahamas and Caribbean for an ideal location that would enable us to create new experiences, while celebrating the culture of this amazing region,” Chapek said.

Disney Imagineer Joe Rohde, whose work includes the design of Disney’s Animal Kingdom theme park in Orlando and Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa in Hawaii, has embarked on an in-depth cultural tour of the Bahamas to meet with local artists and cultural experts. Together, they have explored arts and cultural sites across New Providence and Eleuthera, from Junkanoo shacks to noted art galleries.
“The Lighthouse Point site is so beautiful and so full of nature that we want to preserve this and use our designs to call attention to the extraordinary quality of the place itself – a place of natural beauty with a rich and fascinating cultural tradition,” Rohde said. “We will be directly involved in conservation efforts to preserve and protect the environment that creates this beauty, and we will be working with artists of every kind, much like we did with Aulani in Hawaii, to create a unique destination that is rooted in Bahamian culture and imbued with Disney magic.”

Disney Cruise Line completed its purchase of privately owned Lighthouse Point earlier this year and signed an agreement with the Government of The Bahamas that guides the responsible and sustainable way the site will be developed.

Disney has committed to develop less than 20 percent of the property; employ sustainable building practices, including an open-trestle pier that eliminates the need to dredge a ship channel; establish environmental monitoring programs during construction and operation; and donate more than 190 acres of privately owned land to Government, among other commitments.

Through the Disney Conservation Fund, Disney has provided more than $13 million to marine conservation programs around the globe, including several in The Bahamas. Since 2007, Disney has been directly involved in leading a multiyear initiative to protect and rehabilitate coral reefs in The Bahamas and will continue to work with leading conservation organizations and communities to protect special places there.

Construction at Lighthouse Point will begin only after an Environmental Impact Assessment and Environmental Management Plan are reviewed and accepted by the Government of The Bahamas and public consultation has occurred. Construction could begin in 2020 with completion in late 2022 or 2023.

Port of Galveston Signs 20+ Year Agreement with Royal Caribbean - Royal Caribbean to Help Fund New Terminal.

Artists Rendering of Royal Caribbean's New Cruise Terminal in Galveston Texas

The Port of Galveston, the fourth most active cruise port in North America, has signed a long-term contract with Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. (RCL) for a new $100 million cruise terminal. Through the public-private partnership, RCL will build the terminal, then lease it from the port for an initial term of 20 years, with four 10-year extension options.

The two-story terminal will have a footprint of approximately 170,000 square feet on 10 acres in the eastern section of the port known as Pier 10. Construction is expected to begin in April 2020. Anticipated to open in fall 2021, the facility will feature state-of-the-art technology, including mobile check-in and facial recognition to expedite guest arrival. The terminal will be designed and developed sustainably to meet LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental) certification standards.
Improvements to the pier bulkhead and apron will be made to safely accommodate the cruise line’s largest vessels. In addition, a staging and loading area, bus and taxi staging areas and substantial parking will be constructed.

The port will be responsible for items including maintenance, parking, and improvements to the dock so that it can accommodate the larger vessels. RCL will contribute to the cost of improving the docks.
“This is historic moment, not only for the port but for Galveston. This partnership will bring economic growth to the region and the state by generating new jobs, spending and tax revenues. It also will bring more visitors to the island, a popular tourist destination,” said Port Director/CEO Rodger Rees. “Galveston is on course to become a global destination for cruising, and we are thankful for partners like Royal Caribbean.”

As the Port of Galveston’s cruise industry grows, so does its local and state economic impact. According to a national report, Galveston’s cruise business grew by 13 percent in 2018, resulting in $1.5 billion in cruise industry direct expenditures and 26,241 jobs with total wages of $1.75 billion in Texas.

“We are excited to partner with the Port of Galveston to develop a world-class facility which will allow us to sail our newest, largest and most innovative ships from Texas starting with Allure of the Seas, one of the largest ships in the world,” Michael Bayley, president and CEO, Royal Caribbean International. “The new terminal will allow us to increase our guests to the region by 50% generating a $100 million economic impact within the first year of operation.”

The port began its successful partnership with RCL in 2002 with the inaugural sailing of Rhapsody of the Seas. Currently, the port is home to Enchantment of the Seas and Liberty of the Seas, the largest cruise ship in the state of Texas.

In November 2021, the newly completed terminal will welcome one of the largest cruise ships in the world, Allure of the Seas. Following her $165 million amplification, Allure will pump up the adventure with the addition of the Ultimate Abyss, the tallest slide at sea that touts a 10-story plunge; The Perfect Storm, a thrilling trio of multistory waterslides; and an array of culinary possibilities with more restaurants, including the introduction of Giovanni’s Italian Kitchen & Wine Bar and returning favorites Playmakers Sports Bar & Arcade and El Loco Fresh; and more. Allure will sail 7-night Caribbean itineraries from Galveston and will be the biggest and boldest ship sailing form the Lone Star state.

Royal Caribbean's Odyssey of the Seas to Sail in the Mediterranean in May 2021 and Fort Lauderdale November 2021

Royal Caribbean International’s newest ship, Odyssey of the Seas, will deliver a bold lineup of sought-after destinations as the first Quantum Ultra Class ship to homeport in Rome and sail through the Eastern Mediterranean for the summer season. Royal Caribbean’s game-changing ship will be the first to tout a combination of longer stays in every destination and overnights across some of the Mediterranean’s most luring cities and famed beach destinations. The highly anticipated ship will debut in November 2020, sailing from Fort Lauderdale to the Caribbean for her first season, before continuing her inaugural year in Europe. Odyssey’s Mediterranean cruises for summer 2021 open today for bookings.

Beginning May 2021, Odyssey will take travelers on sun-soaked summer vacations in the Eastern Mediterranean on  7-, 9- and 12-night itineraries to the scenic shores and ancient ruins of Santorini, Mykonos and Athens, Greece; Ephesus and Rhodes, Turkey; Naples, Italy; Heraklion, Crete; and Haifa and Jerusalem, Israel. Vacationers will have more time than ever to explore local cultures with maximum time on shore, from longer days – up to 15 hours at every port -- spent enjoying the multihued waters and beaches of Mykonos and waterfront tavernas of Santorini on 7-night getaways to the Greek Isles, to a double dose of destinations with overnight stays and two full days in Athens and Naples on both 9-night Greek Isles and 12-night Holy Land sailings.

Odyssey will set the standard for delivering unforgettable European adventures, on which travelers will cruise to an exceptional combination of destinations that are in a league of their own as the most popular ports in the Eastern Mediterranean,” said Michael Bayley, President and CEO, Royal Caribbean International. “With extended stays and overnights, Royal Caribbean is combining amazing itineraries with our game-changing ship to create a truly one-of-a-kind Europe vacation.”
The lineup of local experiences available to guests go beyond historic attractions, digging deeper into the vibrant culture and communities of the picturesque destinations. Highlights of adventures in store for Odyssey of the Seas guests:
  • Sorrento and Amalfi Coast:  When visiting Naples, guests can explore the Amalfi Coast, shop for majolica pottery, sample Southern Italian cuisine and enjoy downtime while wandering the flower-filled streets of Sorrento.
  • Athens: Foodies can partake in the culinary history of Athens with a traditional cooking class for a taste of the local culture. Escorted by a local chef, the day begins with ingredient shopping in the Central Food Market before heading to the restaurant to prepare local dishes.
  • Mykonos: A beach day for the books, where the entire family can soak up the Cycladean sun at one of Mykonos' best stretches of surf and sand.
  • Crete: Foodies can embark on a visit to Boutari on the Fantaxometocho Estate, one of the most modern and impressive wineries of Crete, and sample a selection of homegrown wines produced onsite. The neighboring, recently restored village of Archanes is a ‘must see’ with its colorful backstreets, blooming flowers and fruit trees.
  • Jerusalem and Bethlehem: The distinguished history of two biblically significant cities are brought to life while touring storied landmarks, such as The Wailing Wall, Church of the Nativity and Mount of Olives.
  • Nazareth: By way of Haifa, vacationers will travel the region of Galilee to explore Nazareth and its churches, including the Church of Annunciation and the Church of St. Gabriel.
When Odyssey of the Seas makes her North American debut in November 2020, the new ship will be the first of her class to sail the Caribbean’s clear blue waters and visit far-flung destinations like Curacao, Aruba, Grand Cayman and Mexico on 8- and 6-night itineraries from Fort Lauderdale. Odyssey will return to Fort Lauderdale in November 2021 for a second winter, sailing the same combination of itineraries.  Caribbean cruises for winter 2021-22 open on Dec. 19, 2019.

The Quantum Ultra Class ship will tout game-changing, technological innovations like the next generation SeaPlex, the largest indoor space for recreational activities at sea, which will see the addition of this venue’s first Playmakers Sports Bar & Arcade with club-level views of the competition below; a reimagined Adventure Ocean kids program and a maxed-out teen lounge with gaming consoles, music and movies. Guests onboard Odyssey can enjoy all-new dining, including Teppanyaki, serving East Asian flavors in a traditional Japanese style; and Giovanni’s Italian Kitchen & Wine Bar with rustic Italian dishes and a contemporary flair. Odyssey’s vibrant, two-level pool deck will feature two open-air, resort-style pools and four whirlpools with shady casitas and hammocks. The ship will also feature guest favorites, including FlowRider surf simulator; skydiving with Ripcord by iFly; the iconic North Star glass capsule that boasts 360-degree views from 300 feet above sea level; and robot bartenders at Bionic Bar.
