Costa Sneralda is Naved in Savona Italy

Costa Smeralda named in Savona Italy by Penelope Cruz - Costa Cruises

On February 22, 2020 special celebrations were held in Savona for the naming ceremony of Costa Smeralda, Costa Cruises’ sensational new flagship, powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG).

The ship’s godmother and star of the event was international celebrity Penélope Cruz, who performed the ribbon-cutting duties with the traditional breaking of the bottle against the bow of the ship in the presence of the Master of Costa Smeralda, Paolo Benini. Also starring at the celebration was the Italian multi-starred chef Bruno Barbieri, who personally conceived and presented a special gala cocktail, giving guests a taste of his creativity and experience.

The event for Costa Smeralda continued with an extraordinary acrobatic show called “Dream” produced by the creative genius of Viktor Klee and staged in the splendid setting of the Colosseo, the innovative and technologically advanced theatre located at the center of the ship, with nine of the world’s best acrobats. The celebrations ended with a spectacular display of fireworks launched from a barge positioned in the stretch of sea in front of the Priamar Fortress, lighting up the sky of Savona and giving the ship a fitting send-off.

Costa Smeralda is a breakthrough for the cruise industry, as she represents an exceptional combination of environmental innovation, smart technologies and Italian excellence in design, food and experiences.

Costa Smeralda is a tribute to Italy thanks to the extraordinary creative project led by designer Adam D. Tihany that celebrates Italy and gives guests the chance to experience the best it can offer, all in one place. The furnishings, lighting, fabrics and upholstery, and accessories were all made in Italy especially for the new flagship, by 15 partners who are all ambassadors of Italian excellence, and all spaces are inspired by the beauties of Italy. A celebration of Italian design is showcased in the CoDe - Costa Design Museum, the first-ever museum on a cruise ship. The amenities on board are perfectly in line with their sumptuous surroundings. Highlights include the Solemio Spa, the entertainment areas, theme bars in collaboration with leading Italian brands, 16 restaurants and “food experience” areas, including those conceived for casual family dining. The innovative Ristorante LAB offers guests the chance to have fun cooking and learning about food sustainability at the same time. A new concept of entertainment onboard, based on shows and happenings going on at the same time in different parts of the ship, transforms Costa Smeralda into a unique entertainment venue.

The ship is as a “travelling smart city”, where sustainable technologies and circular economy concepts are applied to reduce the environmental footprint and support sustainable cruising. With her innovative technological propulsion system based on LNG, the most advanced fuel technology currently available to reduce emissions, she is able to virtually eliminate sulfur dioxide emissions (zero emissions) and particulate

matter (95-100% reduction), while greatly reducing emissions of nitrogen oxides (direct reduction of 85%) and CO2 (up to 20%). On board, special desalinisation plants process seawater directly to meet daily water supply requirements, and energy consumption is reduced to a minimum thanks to an intelligent energy management system. Waste is managed on board with 100% separate collection for recycling of plastic, paper, glass and aluminum, using an integrated approach inspired by circular economy projects. Finally, the 4GOODFOOD program applied on board is designed to reduce food wastage and to recover food surpluses for social betterment in cooperation with the European Federation of Food Banks.

“It is a pleasure to officially welcome Costa Smeralda to our fleet. This ship is the perfect combination of Italian excellence, which is the key heritage of the Costa brand, and sustainable innovation, for an unforgettable vacation experience. As the market leader in Europe, we are committed to being the first to introduce environmental innovation and lead the way in sustainable cruising for the cruise industry. We were the first company to invest in LNG and we are currently working to develop other sustainable technologies such as battery storage, fuel cells and liquefied gas from renewable energy sources” said Michael Thamm, Group CEO of Costa Group, which includes Costa and Germany’s leading brand, AIDA Cruises, and Carnival Asia. “The naming of a new ship is always very exciting – especially in the case of Costa Smeralda, because she is an unprecedented project. A cruise holiday on this ship allows our guests to enjoy memorable experiences both on board and ashore – whether it is the food, relaxation, high-tech entertainment or authentic encounters in the destinations we visit. This is the Costa of the future, providing us with new opportunities to grow the market and attract consumers who have never been on a cruise before,” said Costa Cruises President Neil Palomba.

The Costa Group was the first cruise operator in the world to pioneer the advanced LNG propulsion system and has ordered a total of five new LNG-fueled ships, two of which – Costa Smeralda and AIDAnova – are already in service. They are part of the Costa Group’s fleet expansion plan, with a total of seven new ships slated for delivery by 2023 and an overall investment worth over €6 billion.
Costa Smeralda entered service on December 21, 2019. She is operating on a one-week itinerary in the Western Mediterranean with calls at Savona, Marseille, Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca, Civitavecchia/Rome and La Spezia. This summer, the new flagship will also be calling at Cagliari, while a stopover in Palermo is planned starting in winter 2021/22.

Celebrity Cruises Celebrity Apex Completes Sea Trials

Celebrity Cruises' Celebrity Apex Completes Sea Trials -Chantiers de Atlantique - European Cruises 2020
Celebrity Cruises' Celebrity Apex Completes Sea Trials -Chantiers de Atlantique

Celebrity Apex returned to the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in Saint Nazaire, France, over the weekend following a very successful first sea trial. As anticipated, the Celebrity Cruises ship followed in the footsteps of its Edge Series sister ship, the award-winning Celebrity Edge, far surpassing performance expectations.

The trial, conducted between February 4 – 8, 2020, in the Bay of Biscay near the shipyard, was overseen by more than 50 crew members, including engineers and nautical experts. Despite the optimal trial conditions, including strong winds and waves, the second-in-series ship showcased a superior level of comfort and fuel efficiency thanks to the revolutionary design of the Parabolic Ultrabow.

“The purpose of a sea trial is to test the functionality of the ship, but this wasn’t just any sea trial – and Celebrity Apex isn’t just any ship,” said Lisa Lutoff-Perlo, President and CEO, Celebrity Cruises. “In typical Edge Series-fashion, the ship absolutely exceeded our expectations, performing perfectly in line with our above-and-beyond operating standards.”

“It was an absolute honor to stand at the helm of Celebrity Apex for her highly successful first sea trial,” said Celebrity Apex Captain Dimitris Kafetzis. “Celebrity Apex is truly a beautiful and highly advanced vessel.”

Celebrity Apex encores the transformational look and feel of the line’s first Edge Series ship, Celebrity Edge, with such distinctive features as the floating Magic Carpet cantilevered off the ship's side inviting guests to eat, drink and soar up to 16 decks above the sea; the all-exclusive experience for all suite guests in The Retreat; dramatically expanded staterooms with Infinite Verandas; soothing indoor and outdoor garden escapes; magnificent two-story Edge Villas with their own private terrace and plunge pool; and high-style spaces throughout public areas, keeping focus on the contemporary design elements that are a highlight of the Edge Series of ships.

It then adds new culinary, spa and wellness, and entertainment features and experiences guaranteed to make Celebrity Apex the industry’s “it” ship. Celebrity Apex will also debut new, all-inclusive amenities and pre-cruise concierge services in The Retreat for all suite guests.

Celebrity Apex will begin its inaugural season on April 1, 2020, with a mini-season of five sailings to Northern Europe destinations and then spend the summer sailing seven-to-12-night itineraries in the Mediterranean. In November, Celebrity Apex will reposition to Fort Lauderdale for a winter season of week-long Caribbean sailings.

The cruise line has also committed to bringing Symphony of the Seas to the island nation with a call on Nov. 3, 2020. Docking at a new port at the capital of St. John’s, Symphony will be the first Oasis Class ship to visit the island. Italy's Fincantieri Delivers Virgin Voyages First Ship - The Scarlett Lady

Italy's Fincantieri Delivers Virgin Voyages First Cruise Ship - the Scarlet Lady - Adults only - sailing from Miami
Italy's Fincantieri Delivers Virgin Voyages First Cruise Ship - the Scarlet Lady

Virgin Voyages, the new lifestyle and travel brand delivering irresistible vacations in cruising, announced today that the Scarlet Lady has officially reached completion. Nearly three years in the making, Virgin Voyages formally welcomes its first 'Lady Ship,' Scarlet Lady, in its fleet of four to the open waters, departing the shipyard in Genoa, Italy. In just 46 days, Sailors will embark on the Maiden Voyage, departing from her home port in Miami.

On the heels of this celebratory occasion, Virgin Voyages welcomes Scarlet Lady with an industry-leading approach that takes immediate action to address climate change. Not only has the brand designed its fleet of ships to the latest energy-efficiency standards with state-of-the art equipment, Virgin Voyages is offsetting its direct climate change emissions through the purchase of carbon offsets. This commitment makes the brand the first cruise line to become carbon-neutral for its direct emissions footprint from its first day of commercial operation. The projects that will be supported by Scarlet Lady will meet high-quality, internationally-recognized verification standards, including The Gold Standard and the Verified Carbon Standard.

"It's wonderful to welcome Scarlet Lady today," says Virgin Group Founder Sir Richard Branson. "I'm so proud that as we start this exciting journey, we also bring to life Virgin Voyages' commitment to preserving the ocean and the first of many steps towards a net zero carbon future."
The brand has recognized that climate change is an urgent, global issue for every industry and business. Like others, Virgin Voyages' long-term ambition is a net-zero carbon future. This will require significant advancements in technology and infrastructure, and access to solutions that remain in development. And, Virgin Voyages is committed to working with the industry to support the necessary research and development to advance carbon-free fuels and to scale commercially viable solutions.

"The ocean is our home, and we are on a mission to protect it. The single-biggest threat facing our ocean is climate change, and we want to be part of the solution," said Tom McAlpin, CEO and President of Virgin Voyages. "We are committed to pioneering new technologies onboard and working with our industry peers to advance research and development for zero-carbon fuels."
Virgin Voyages is one of first cruise lines to use Climeon, a technology that utilizes heat generated from the ship's engines to generate electricity, thereby decreasing the demand for fuel. While the industry continues to improve on the journey for readily available and commercially viable solutions, purchasing high-quality carbon offsets allows us to take immediate action, while also supporting a long-term strategy that secures a net-zero future for the cruise industry.

Oceanwide Expeditions Steel Cutting for New Exploration Ship Janssonius sister ship Hondius
Oceanwide Expeditions Steel Cutting for New Exploration Ship Janssonius

As announced last July (2019), Oceanwide Expeditions has ordered a new built Polar Class 6 ship: M/v Janssonius. She will have the same passenger capacity as Hondius (174), a nearly identical size and design, and will be a Polar Class 6 ice-strengthened vessel equivalent to a 1A super ice-class ship.

Completely on schedule, the Steel Cutting Ceremony took place in Split's Brodosplit shipyard, which marks the beginning of the construction of the vessel.

The first trip planned for Janssonius will be a spectacular voyage to South Georgia, departing on 05 November 2021. The full list of dates and rates of the vessel will follow shortly.

Janssonius offers high-quality accommodation for 170 passengers in six grand suites with balconies (27 square meters, 291 square feet), eight junior suites (19 to 20 square meters, 205 to 215 square feet), eight superior cabins (20 to 21 square meters, 215 to 226 square feet), 11 twin deluxe cabins, (19 to 21 square meters, 205 to 226 square feet), 14 twin window cabins (12 to 14 square meters, 129 to 151 square feet) as well as 27 twin porthole cabins, two triple porthole cabins, and four quadruple porthole cabins that vary in size from 12 to 18 square meters, or 129 to 194 square feet. The passenger capacity certificate for Janssonius is 196 persons. One deck consists of a large observation lounge and separate lecture room, which are reserved for a wide variety of interactive workshops, exhibitions, and performances particular to Janssonius. Though elegantly designed in stylish mid-century modern décor, this vessel holds true to Oceanwide’s distinctive cozy and informal atmosphere.

Ponant Cruises Le Commandant Charcot To Sail the Antarctica in 2021 - 2022

Luxury cruise ship operator Ponant's NEW luxury exploration ship Le Commandant Charcot  will sail the four corners of the globe.

Ponant has revealed the inaugural Antarctic sailings for its first-ever hybrid electric polar vessel, Le Commandant Charcot. Among the highlights of the ships 2021/22 winter season will be a visit to Peter Island, one of the least visited islands in the region, as well as tethered hot air balloon rides above Antarctica.

"Nearly a century after the heroic age of exploration, Antarctica remains largely undiscovered today," the line said in a press release. "For the first time, Ponant's guests will be able to discover its remote parts like The Ross Sea -- which has one of the continent's most extreme weather patterns -- and the Bellingshausen Sea, home to colonies of emperor penguins."

The five options include: "The Emperor Penguins of the Bellingshausen Sea," an 18-night sailing departing November 1, 2021; "Expedition to Charcot and Peter Islands," a two-week cruise departing on November 19 and December 14, 2021, as well as February 2, 2022; "The Weddell Sea & Larsen Ice Shelf,"  an 11-night voyage departing December 3 and 28, 2021, as well as March 14 and 25, 2022; "The Ross Sea," a 24-night sailing departing February 16, 2022; and "The Weddell Sea & The South Sandwich Islands," a 17-night cruise departing April 5, 2022.

Expeditions aboard Le Commandant Charcot will feature a range of activities including hikes, Zodiac excursions, hovercraft rides, kayaking and even diving in polar waters. Additionally, cruisers will be able to participate in research and experiments led by a team of onboard scientists.

Commandant Charcot will be powered exclusively by battery and LNG (liquefied natural gas), the cleanest fuel currently available on the market. It will also feature a scientific research laboratory onboard with equipment designed to study the ecosystems and biodiversity of polar environments.

Norwegian Spirit to Sport New Hull Art After Emerging From $100 Million Dollar Refit - New dining establishments, redesigned lounges and more
Norwegian Spirit to Sport New Hull Art After Emerging From $100 Million Dollar Refit.

Work is progressing on the massive 40-day overhaul of Norwegian Cruise Line's Norwegian Spirit occurring  at Chantier Naval de Marseille in Marseille, France. Two GNV ferries — Rhapsody and GNV Allegra– are being used as accommodation ships to house the 1,600+ crew members and army of workers required to enhance the Norwegian Spirit.

Norwegian Spirit will emerge from dry dock on February 11, 2020 after an over $100 million revitalization. The ship will feature 14 new venues, additional staterooms and an expanded Mandara Spa. Drawing inspiration from the brand’s most recent and highly successful newbuilds, the updated elements on board Norwegian Spirit will take the guest experience to the next level.

New complimentary dining venues will be introduced including an additional main dining room, Taste; the 24-hour eatery, The Local Bar and Grill; the all-day dining outlet, Garden Café; the Great Outdoors Bar; and Waves Pool Bar.

New venues making their debut aboard Norwegian Spirit will include Bliss Ultra Lounge and Spinnaker Lounge, which features the Humidor Cigar Lounge. Splash Academy, the children’s waterpark, will be replaced with the adults-only retreat Spice H2O, a daytime lounge featuring two new hot tubs and a dedicated bar, which transforms into an after-hours entertainment venue.

Mandara Spa will double in size to nearly 7,000 square feet and include a relaxation area with heated loungers, a new Jacuzzi room, and a sauna, steam room and water therapy experience. The expansion of Pulse Fitness Center will allow guests to begin or maintain their fitness routine while at sea. The ship will also debut contemporary hull art.

In addition, Norwegian Spirit will feature Onda by Scarpetta, joining the portfolio of critically acclaimed Scarpetta restaurants in New York City and the Hamptons; Miami; Las Vegas; Philadelphia; Newport, R.I.; London; and making its debut in November onboard Norwegian Encore. The name Scarpetta is derived from the Italian expression, 'fare la Scarpetta,' which means to savor a meal to the last bite. Onda, or 'wave' in Italian, will adapt the same ethos and bring the charm and effortless elegance of its urbane Scarpetta sister to the sea. Reaffirming Norwegian's commitment to providing elevated dining experiences across the fleet, guests will enjoy the rich and bold flavors the modern Italian restaurant will be known for, including a selection of beautifully prepared seafood.

Norwegian Spirit will make her debut in Asia fresh off her multi-million-dollar revitalization offering magnificent itineraries, including 9-day Japan cruises as well as 12+ day Immersive Japan and China cruises, starting in March 2020.

She will be the first in the Company’s fleet to visit Bali (Celun Bawang), Jakarta and Surabaya, Indonesia; Beppu, Kumamoto, Nagoya and Tokyo, Japan; Taipei (Keelung) Taiwan; and Yangon, Myanmar. Following two, 20-day exotic expeditions exploring Greece, Israel, Egypt and Abu Dhabi from Rome (Civitavecchia); and Seychelles, Madagascar and South Africa from Dubai; she will offer a series of destination-rich voyages to Southeast Asia, China and Japan from Singapore; Hong Kong, China; and Tokyo and Yokohama, Japan through 2020.

The video showcases the new amenities that can be found aboard the Norwegian Spirit.
