Sea Cloud Cruises is happy to announce the new Captain for the Sea Cloud Spirit, Gerald Schöber. The 54-year old Captain from Northern Germany has many years of windjammer experience. "It is very special to be the first Captain on such a unique ship" said Schöber. On August 29 he will set sail with guests for the ship’s maiden voyage. Under his command, Sea Cloud Spirit is also going to call in the United States for the first time, in Miami on March 2021, wrapping up a Central American sailing. The American itineraries planned for 2021 are very special for the newbuilt, since the first owner of the Sea Cloud was American born Marjorie Merriweather Post.

Capt. Schöber will continue the tradition of the company’s open bridge policy, welcoming all guests on the bridge to answer questions and participate in discussions. In the coming weeks, he will accompany the Sea Cloud and Sea Cloud II on trips to learn everything about the ships and atmosphere onboard.

Schöber is a passionate sailor, and is thrilled to sail the Sea Cloud Spirit, which is directly linked to the legendary windjammer era of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Three-masted full ships, like the new Sea Cloud Spirit, were the backbone of the beginning of world trade, and the bridge between the continents. "At a time when everything seems to be over-the-top, faster and more digital, traditionally hand-sailed ships stand for pure deceleration and relaxation. It is an awe-inspiring experience, when a ship is only moved by wind power.” said Schöber, who has been a Captain on tall ships before.

Schöber came to commercial shipping later in life. His father was a naval officer, and he learned to sail on the Flensburg Fjord in Germany at a young age, and later served for four years with the Navy. However, afterwards he decided to give the high seas a break, and studied business informatics, and then later worked as an IT specialist. At some point, he yearned for a new adventure, the seas were calling. Schöber took off for a Baltic Sea trip for several months with his own boat, and finally let his passion become a profession, and decided to pursue a seafaring career.

Schöber studied nautical science, maritime transport, and logistics at the Flensburg University of Applied Sciences, and completed his training as a naval cadet, and then sailed as an officer on merchant ships at a Hamburg shipping company.

Long before contacting the crewing agency, he had heard of the special environment on board the legendary Sea Cloud and her younger sister Sea Cloud II. Both ships are known for their casual feel, and their friendly interaction between crew members and guests. Schöber is looking forward to becoming a part of this special family.

"To be the first Captain for the Sea Cloud Spirit is a great honor, and I am humbled that the management entrusts me with this undertaking," said Schöber.

Since 1979, Sea Cloud Cruises has been one of the world’s top names in cruises. The Sea Cloud, celebrating her 90th birthday in 2021, and its younger sister Sea Cloud II, regularly appear with five stars each in the Berlitz Cruise Guide’s list and rank under the best five cruise ships in the world.
