Princess Cruises Extends Pause of Global Ship Operations For Remaining 2020 Summer Season

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. Due to reduced air flight availability, the closure of cruise ports in regions around the world and other factors impacting international travel, Princess Cruises is extending its pause of global ship operations and has therefore made the extremely difficult decision to cancel select cruises through the end of the 2020 summer season, including the following cruises and associated cruisetours:
  • All remaining Alaska cruises on Emerald Princess and Ruby Princess
  • All remaining Europe and Transatlantic cruises on Enchanted Princess, Regal Princess, Sky Princess, Crown Princess and Island Princess
  • Summer Caribbean cruises and all Canada & New England cruises on Caribbean Princess and Sky Princess
  • Summer to Fall cruises departing from Japan on Diamond Princess
  • Australia-based cruises on Sapphire Princess and Sea Princess through August
  • July cruises sailing from Taiwan on Majestic Princess
  • Fall cruises sailing to Hawaii and French Polynesia on Pacific Princess through November
As the world is still preparing to resume travel, it is with much disappointment that we announce an extension of our pause of global ship operations and the cancellation of cruise vacations for our loyal guests,” said Jan Swartz, president of Princess Cruises. Among other disruptions, airlines have limited their flight availability and many popular cruise ports are closed. It saddens us to think about the impact on the livelihood of our teammates, business partners and the communities we visit.
Guests currently booked on these canceled voyages, who have paid Princess in full, will have the option to receive a Future Cruise Credit (FCC) equivalent to 100% of the cruise fare paid plus an additional bonus FCC equal to 25% of the cruise fare.
For guests who have not paid in full, Princess will Double the Deposit, providing a refundable FCC for the money currently on deposit plus a matching bonus FCC that can be used on any voyage through May 1, 2022. The matching bonus FCC will not exceed the base cruise fare amount of the currently booked cruise and will have a minimum value of $100 per person.
In order to receive the above FCC no action is required.
Alternatively, guests can request a full refund for all monies paid on their booking through this online form. Requests must be received by June 15, 2020, or they will receive the refundable Future Cruise Credit option.
Princess will protect travel advisor commissions on bookings for cancelled cruises that were paid in full, in recognition of the critical role they play in the cruise line’s business and success.
The most current information and instructions for booked guests affected by these cancellations, and more information on FCCs and refunds, can be found online at Information on Impacted & Cancelled Cruises.

The Scenic Group Looks to the Future as Construction Begins on Eclipse II

The first of five new custom-built vessels planned for the next six years across the group

The Scenic Group announced that steel cutting for Scenic Eclipse II has commenced in Croatia as the initial step in the construction of the world’s second Discovery Ship. A newly formed company, MKM Yachts, wholly owned by the Scenic Group, will now take full responsibility for all new ocean ship builds starting with the construction of Scenic Eclipse II.
MKM Yachts confirmed an agreement with the Croatian Government to commence shipbuilding operations in a dedicated separate section of the existing Maj 3 Shipyard in Rijeka. “This outcome has been the result of a massive effort by our entire Croatian team, and in particular, our new Managing Director of MKM Yachts, Sasa Čokljat,” said Mr Glen Moroney, owner and Chairman, Scenic Group. “The Croatian Government has committed to supporting the redevelopment of the shipyard and assist in the funding of our new building program, which will comprise five custom built vessels over the next six years. All vessels will be of the highest 6-star standard with the ability to navigate the polar regions.”
Mr. Čokljat said that the new cruise line business model will allow MKM Yachts to take over a portion of Rijeka's shipyard and use existing infrastructure and knowledge of Croatian shipbuilders, working in collaboration with Scenic's expert team.
Mr. Čokljat praised the Government of the Republic of Croatia for their vision at the beginning of the negotiations as well as their readiness to "think outside the box," offering a long-term development relationship with Croatian shipbuilding and the opportunity to preserve rich traditions in shipbuilding, continuity of production and knowledge, and hundreds of jobs. “I believe that the niche for the construction of research cruisers represents a sound direction for the revival of Croatian shipbuilding, with a new face for the future. We can be proud that the construction of one of the best ships in the world in its class takes place right here in Rijeka,” said Čokljat.
The 228-passenger ultra-luxury mega yacht, designed especially for polar expedition cruising conditions, “heralds an exciting new era for the Scenic Group, as we continue to develop our luxury ocean products under both Scenic and Emerald Cruises brands,” added Mr. Moroney. The first of these ships, Scenic Eclipse, launched in August 2019 to great fanfare, with a christening held in New York City on September 10, 2019 with Dame Helen Mirren doing the honors as the ship’s Godmother. The Discovery Yacht has since been named “Best New Ship” by Cruise Critic and as one of the best in the world on Conde Nast Traveler’s 2020 Hot List for cruise ships.
Inspired by the sleek contours of a sailing yacht and custom-built with an unwavering commitment to safety and excellence in design, Scenic Eclipse combines a wealth of world-class facilities with the opportunity for unrivalled exploration. Scenic Eclipse has the highest Polar Class 6 rating and uses custom-built stabilisers that are 50% larger than those of other ships to provide greater stability as it navigates the water. The GPS dynamic positioning allows the ship to maintain location without dropping anchor onto sensitive water beds and the Advanced Wastewater Treatment Systems, plus the highly efficient engines will reduce emissions, noise and vibrations, for minimal disturbances to the marine life environment.
A voyage of discovery with Scenic Eclipse is truly all-inclusive luxury without exception. With a maximum of 228 guests (200 in polar regions), ship features include spacious all verandah suites from 345² to nearly 2,600², 10 dining experiences, butler service for all guests, two on-board six-guest helicopters and a six-guest submarine capable of diving nearly 1,000 feet, a comprehensive choice of shore excursions, exclusive Scenic Enrich experiences, Scenic Discovery excursions, Discovery Specialists and guides, full use of the Senses Spa and gym, and much more.

Coronavirus Updates - Cruise Line Layoffs, New Proposed Start Up Dates, Cruise Life Going Forward

Cruise Industry Layoffs, Restart and financing
Coronavirus continues to Impact  the Cruise Industry as lines scramble to survive and restart.

Here are some cruise industry updates related to the coronavirus.

  • Corporate layoff - this week Carnival Cruises announced over 500 additional layoffs. These are in addition to the layoffs previously announced by Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line, MSC and others. The reductions in staff definitely make it apparent that the cruise industry recovery will be a marathon and not a sprint.
  • Some Cruise Lines have announced revised dates to return to service. I really give any dates provided little merit since the dates have been moved out a number of times and the future is uncertain. New dates shared this past week included - Norwegian Cruise Line cancelling all cruises for July. Virgin Voyages projecting an October 16 start up. Royal Caribbean is now projecting an 8/1 start up date.
  • Cruise lines continue to find creative ways to generate funds and survive. A month ago Carnival found new investors in the form of the Saudi Arabian government.  Royal Caribbean and Norwegian have also mortgaged ships and executed other levers to raise funding. The latest example occurred this week...... Royal Caribbean raised  $3.3 billion in Senior Secured Bonds. The Notes and the related guarantees will be backed-up by 28 of the company's vessels and material / intellectual property of the company.

Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean Leverage German Financing Holiday

Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line Leverage German Payment Holiday.
Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line Leverage German Payment Holiday Offer

According to a statement filed with the Security and Exchange Committee - Both Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean have agreed to leverage an offer from the German Government to delay payments on the mortgages / loans - for ships constructed in Germany. The terms will not eliminate payments - but allow the cruise lines to forgo payments for the next 12 months and extend the loan by 12 months.

The official filing is as follows:

Norwegian Cruise Line.

Beginning on April 20, 2020, NCL Corporation Ltd. (“NCLC”), a subsidiary of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. (the “Company”), amended the export-credit backed facilities that finance Norwegian Bliss, Norwegian Breakaway, Norwegian Encore, Norwegian Escape, Norwegian Getaway and Norwegian Joy to incorporate the terms of a 12-month debt holiday initiative offered to the cruise industry by Euler Hermes Aktiengesellschaft (“Hermes”), the official export credit agency of Germany. The debt holiday was initiated to provide interim debt service and financial covenant relief for borrowers during the current global COVID-19 pandemic with respect to their Hermes guaranteed financings. Across the facilities detailed below, these amendments provide approximately $386 million of incremental liquidity to the Company through April 2021.

Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean Cruises announced it had made changes to the export-credit backed loan facility incurred to finance Quantum of the Seas in order to incorporate the benefits of a 12-month debt holiday initiative being offered by Euler Hermes Aktiengesellschaft, the official export credit agency of Germany.

Other ships covered under this agreement include the financing of the Celebrity Eclipse, Celebrity Equinox, Celebrity Solstice and Celebrity Silhouette in order to incorporate the benefits of the Debt Holiday.

Hapag-Lloyd Cruises Is Bringing Its Fleet Home

Hapag-Lloyd Fleet Heading Home Until Service Resume Post Coronavirus Pause. Europa, Europa 2, Hanseatic Inspiration, Hanseatic Nature, Bremen
Hapag-Lloyd Fleet Heading Home Until Service Resume Post Coronavirus  Pause.

Hapag-Lloyd Cruises is bringing its fleet home

  • Hapag-Lloyd Cruises is positioning four of its five ships in Hamburg
  • The HANSEATIC nature will be the first to arrive on April 20
  • This will be followed on May 2 by the HANSEATIC inspiration, the EUROPA and the EUROPA 2

Hamburg, April 17, 2020 – “Stay at home” is the global message of the moment. The fleet of the Hamburg-based cruise company Hapag-Lloyd Cruises, which would normally be sailing the seven seas, is now heading for the waters of its home port. The expedition ship, the HANSEATIC nature, will be the first to return and is expected to arrive in Hamburg, Germany, on April 20. Its sister ship, the international HANSEATIC inspiration, and the two luxury ships, the EUROPA and the international EUROPA 2, are also now on their way back to Hamburg. All three are expected to arrive in the port on May 2 and will remain there for the time being until they can start operating their schedules again. The BREMEN will remain off Auckland/New Zealand.

The two expedition ships, the HANSEATIC nature and the HANSEATIC inspiration, will go to Blohm+Voss for repair work. The EUROPA 2 will head to its berth in Altona and the EUROPA will moor up at the O’Swaldkai. The last of the guests on board the Hapag-Lloyd Cruises’ fleet all returned home safe and well on March 21. The cruise operator brought a total of around 1,000 guests home early from all over the world, due to the coronavirus pandemic. Charter flights had to be organized, as scheduled flights had been cancelled.

A special meeting of ships off Barbados
The HANSEATIC nature, which is currently in the North Atlantic on course for Hamburg, has already picked up crew members from its sister ships in Bridgetown/Barbados, the HANSEATIC inspiration and EUROPA, bringing them back to Hamburg. “We wanted to give as many crew members as we could the opportunity to return home as soon as possible. This posed a logistical challenge due to the suspension of flights and the travel restrictions in place currently. Therefore, we took matters into our own hands for the return transport and transformed the journey of our HANSEATIC nature into a “crew cruise.” "So we are bringing our crew back to their families safe and well,” explains Karl J. Pojer, CEO of Hapag-Lloyd Cruises.

Life on board without guests
Even if there are no guests aboard the ships, life on board never stands still. The remaining crew members on the ships are still keeping busy. Meetings are still being held. There are also watches and inspection rounds to carry out. Maintenance and repair work that needs to be done is being completed where possible. Some of this cannot be carried out during normal operation as the crew does have the time now and the opportunity to tackle it. One of the jobs on the agenda, for example, is a thorough spring cleaning of the entire ship. Noisy work - that is out of the question when guests are on board - is also being carried out now. There are also various training sessions for the crew.

Walk the Cruise – walking on board to Hamburg in 27 days
To keep fit, the crew on the HANSEATIC nature has started a project called “Walk the Cruise.” The idea is for the crew to cover the entire distance of the ship’s journey on foot, which the HANSEATIC nature is sailing, until it reaches its home port in Hamburg, Germany – a total of 7,600 nautical miles (8,751 miles; 14,084 kilometers). For this reason, every day, on Deck 9 the 138 crew members are each walking, or jogging 28 laps of 135 meters (148 yards). That totals 3.8 kilometers (2.4 miles). They are keeping count on a list and at the end of the 27-day cruise, this should take them to 14,084 kilometers – or around 7,600 nautical miles.

Carnival Corporation Ships On Order.

Carnival Corporation's Planned Growth for the next 5 Years - New ships - construction
Carnival Corporation's Planned Growth for the next 5 Years

Carnival Corporation is expecting to take delivery of 18 new ships - varying from large LNG-powered cruise ships to smaller, luxury, expedition ship - over the next 5 years.

The brands expecting new ships include: Carnival (2 ships)- with the new Mardi Gras expected later this year; AIDA (2 ships), Cunard (1), Costa (2), Princess (4), Seabourn (2), Holland America (1), Carnival China (2) and P&O (2).

I fully expect to see ships delivery pushed out due to the closure of European shipyards due to the coronavirus as well as some order cancelled in totality due to the total lack of demand.

As one cruise line executive said...."We are just hoping to have all of our existing fleet operational again in the upcoming years".

Promotional Video Emerald Yacht Cruises - Emerald Azzurra

Emerald Cruises has released new video showcasing the initial build of its first oceangoing super yacht, Emerald Azzurra, along with first look images from the building of Emerald Luna, the line’s newest Star-Ship on the rivers of Europe. Both Emerald Azzurra and Emerald Luna are scheduled to launch in 2021.

“As much as life can feel uncertain during this period of societal disruption, we believe travel can serve as a true emotional healing agent for when we are again able to wander the world,” said Jayne O’Brien, managing director, Scenic Group USA. “We are committed to the future of small ship travel and looking to tomorrow’s adventures helps keeps hope front and center. In that spirit, we are proud to share the first of our Emerald Azzurra new build videos and look forward to welcoming guests next year.”

“Our time-lapse video shows the building of Emerald Azzurra is still on schedule, with the shipyard progressing their work on construction and pre-outfitting of hull blocks as expected,” said Glen Moroney, owner and chairman of Scenic Group. “While there are some delays in equipment delivery from Europe and China, we continue to work with the shipyard on how to minimize that impact. The entire Emerald Yacht Cruises team is excited to see the project progressing and look forward to welcoming guests onboard this magnificent yacht as it begins cruising the Mediterranean in 2021.”

The images of Emerald Luna showcase its ongoing progress as well. “All construction and equipment deliveries are on schedule,” said Moroney. Emerald Luna will be the ninth ship in Emerald Waterways’ fleet and will join Emerald Sky, Star, Sun, Dawn and Destiny cruising the Rhine, Maine and Danube Rivers. Emerald Liberté, sailing on the Rhône River, Emerald Radiance on the Douro River and Emerald Harmony on the Mekong river.

The 360-foot-long Emerald Azzurra is being built in Ha Long City, Vietnam, and is scheduled to set sail in August 2021. Her 47 itineraries throughout 2021 and 2022 will explore destinations including the Mediterranean – Greece, Croatia, Italy, France, Cyprus, Turkey, Malta and Spain – and the Red Sea – Israel, Jordan and Egypt. Emerald Yacht Cruises will offer guests an intimate yacht cruising experience on board with a capacity set at just 100 guests and on shore, providing unrivalled access to smaller and less touristic ports and harbors only small yachts can reach.

The new addition to Emerald Waterways' Star-Ship river fleet, Emerald Luna is set to sail in spring 2021. The 180-guest vessel promises all the line’s innovative and contemporary Star-Ship features including the signature indoor heated pool that seamlessly transforms into an evening cinema, the panoramic Sun Deck and beautifully appointed suites and staterooms.

Marella Cruises Announces the Retirement of the Marella Celebration.

Marella Cruises to Retire Marella Celebration effective immediately due to Coronavirus ex holland america Noordam
Marella Cruises to Retire Marella Celebration effective immediately.

As predicted - cruise lines are expected to rationalize their fleets and remove / retire / scrap their ships for cash as well as cold layup their ships to contain costs.

Marella Cruises is the first cruise line to pull that lever with their most recent announcement. Marella Cruises is making capacity adjustments and will retire the 1984-built Celebration, according to a company statement.

The ship was built in 1984 by Chantiers de l'Atlantique for Holland America Line as the MS Noordam.

The ship sailed under the Holland America Line brand through 2005, when she was moved to Thomson Cruises, which eventually became Marella.

"The Marella Celebration is one of the longest standing and most loved ships in the Marella Cruises fleet. She’s sailed with the cruise line for 15 years, carrying almost half a million passengers. The ship was due to homeport in Dubrovnik in summer ’20 and summer ’21 and Cyprus and Dubai for the winter season," the company said, in a statement.

Marella, owned by TUI Group, did not elaborate on whether it would sell or scrap the vessel.

Stay tuned for more updates.

As of May 9th, 2020, the Marella Celebration was removed from the TUI Website. The Marella Celebration is currently sailing outside the mouth of the Solent River on her way to Southampton.

Poseidon Expeditions Renews Charter Contract for Sea Spirit

Poseidon Expeditions announced that it has signed an agreement with ship owner SunStone Ships, Inc. to extend the charter of the 114-passenger expedition ship Sea Spirit for two years. This will keep the ship flying the Poseidon Expeditions banner until May 2024.

Nikolay Saveliev, founder and president of Poseidon Expeditions (https://poseidonexpeditions.com/), a specialist in active adventure cruises in Arctic and Antarctic regions, said that the Sea Spirit has received great acceptance in the marketplace and that the company is delighted to be able to continue offering the ship to its travel partners and polar travelers around the globe.

“With the Sea Spirit, we have a smaller-capacity, premium vessel that’s perceived as very desirable compared with most of the newly announced polar-class ships in the range of 200-500 passengers. Those wanting to go to Antarctica or to the Arctic understand the advantages that a smaller vessel can provide – better access to remote areas and landing sites; more ‘face time’ with the expedition team; and a camaraderie among guests and staff that is more difficult to achieve aboard larger ships,” he added.

Saveliev continued: “This ship has delivered a consistently high level of service and performance in the polar regions from the ship’s officers, catering and hospitality team. Sunstone has done a great job keeping the passenger areas renovated and the technical features consistently updated, such as the new, state-of-the art Rolls Royce Zero Speed Stabilizers installed in 2019. Combined with our exceptional expedition staff, which curates experiences for our guests that are engaging, educational and fun, it’s no wonder the Sea Spirit achieves a 4.9 ranking out of a possible 5.0 from TrustPilot,  the well-established third-party review site.”

The founder of Poseidon added that plans were still moving forward with a new build, configured for fewer than 150 passengers, but that an official announcement with details was still forthcoming.

Like a migrating bird, the Sea Spirit spends her year between the two polar regions, in Antarctica and the Southern Ocean from late October through mid-March and then in the sub-Arctic and Arctic regions of the British Isles, Svalbard, Franz Josef Land and Greenland from mid-May through September.

'We came to the difficult decision to consolidate the Victory II itineraries with Victory I due to the shortened nature of our 2020 season, as a result of the ongoing travel restrictions and port closures. It is our hope that in doing so, we can prioritize delivering the extraordinary Great Lakes sailing experience that our loyal guests have come to expect from the VCL brand,' said John Waggoner, founder and CEO of VCL's parent, American Queen Steamboat Co.

  • Miami: Carnival Horizon, Carnival Magic and Carnival Sensation.
  • Port Canaveral: Carnival Breeze and Carnival Elation.
